ITAS TO ITAP CONVERSION

Ah, you know one Australian couple who had no issues? 🤭 Then it must be true for everyone…
I know several couples (the mentioned one was Austrian, not Australian. Austria is a country in Europe, while Australia is a completely separate continent), and the immigration office as well can confirm the 2-year rule. Sometimes they do knot know what are they talking about, but the directorate in Jakarta knows and is as I mentioned before.

If your Auntie Mary is taller than your Uncle Joe, it does not mean that the women on average are taller than men.

International marriage must be in accordance with the laws of both countries where the spouses are. To the extreme, if an Indonesian man marries a man in France, that kind of marriage is not valid. If you marry a 10-year-old girl, for example from Saudi Arabia(which allows child marriage), that marriage will not be valid if your country of origin if it does not allow child marriage.

Many countries, for example, France requires foreign marriage registration in France, for to marriage be valid in France.

OK, seen my name mentioned so figure I should post. We have been married for quite some time now, 42 years and counting. While we have been married 42 (1981) years and were so in the US, we never registered it at the Indonesian Embassy until June, 2012 when we were soon to move. It was then registered at CatSip Jakarta in Jan, 2013 after our arrival in Sep and Oct 2012.

Every single document we have that shows a marriage date says the same as our marriage licence from the YS. None have a date of registration for a marriage date.

I am fully aware that this is Indonesia. From one day to the next, from one area to another, and from one person to another, things can be and most likely will be different. Maybe because of someone actually understanding the law, missinterpeting the law, not receiving updates to a law, or completely ignoring the laws or changes made to them, you will get different opinions and swearing they know and you don't know the laws. So, you never know what kind of response or demands you will receive. One person's experience will probably be different than the other persons.

BTW, I have a lifetime KITAP which requires check in every 5 years. It is my understanding that check in should be done 2 months in advance and the same paperwork you submitted to get the KITAP will be required at that time. Just no payment for the KITAP. I will not be surprised if they come up with some unknown fees though.

Do you have to do the fingerprints and photos all over again in reporting back after 5 years?

With a WNI KITAS, we applied for KITAP towards the end of that year. Apart from the usual paperwork there were no problems and we did not use an agent. With 5 years on KITAP recently applied for the "permanent" KITAP. About four visits to Imm offices but it all went smoothly. I have to report in after 5 years but no more paperwork or futher expenditure. Now I have to make sure I live more than 5 years to get my moneys worth.

what were the requirements ( documents) please?
Oops. My earlier post was incorrect asserting that once you have the permanent Kitap you just have to report near the end of the 5 year period. In fact you still need to present the whole range of documents as when making the application for the permanent Kitap. However, there is no charge with this process.

If you go to an Immigration office they have pamphlets listing all the documents required. I copied the material below from Bard which is not always reliable. This will give you a general idea but best to get the immigration pamphlet listing the requirements.

From Bard: "
The documents required for a KITAP application in Indonesia depend on your specific situation and the reasons for seeking it. However, here are some general requirements to get you started:

General Documents:

  • Valid passport: Your passport must be valid for at least 18 months beyond the application date.
  • Original KITAS: You must have held a valid KITAS for at least three consecutive years before applying for KITAP.
  • Sponsorship letter: A letter from your sponsor (Indonesian spouse, PT PMA company, or authorized agent) guaranteeing your stay and financial support.
  • Sponsor's ID (KTP): A copy of your sponsor's Indonesian ID card (Kartu Tanda Penduduk).
  • Tax Obligation Main Number (NPWP): Both you and your sponsor need an NPWP for tax purposes.

Additional Documents based on your category:

  • Married to an Indonesian:
    • Marriage certificate (Surat Nikah).
    • Family register (Kartu Keluarga) of your spouse.
    • Bank statement of your spouse with a minimum balance of Rp. 10,000,000.
  • Foreign investor or expert:
    • Copy of work permit (IMTA) issued within the last five years.
    • Copy of Residence Permit and Stay Permit Card (RPTKA) issued within the last five years.
    • Copy of company documents if working for a PT PMA company.
  • Retiree:
    • Statement letter confirming you do not intend to work in Indonesia.
    • Proof of sufficient income to support yourself (e.g., pension statements).

Please note: This is not an exhaustive list, and specific requirements may vary depending on your individual circumstances. It's strongly recommended to contact the nearest Indonesian Immigration office or consult with a visa specialist for a complete and up-to-date list of required documents.

So they might ask it to be attached with with the necessary Sponsor Statement and Guarantee Letter, to make the case stronger (?)
  • There is also no requirement for an NPWP.

Men should wear a tie in the photo "formal"
I had dealings with Immigration last week. Collared shirt but no tie in any of my pictures. No one said a word. I don't even own a tie. Have also been to plenty "formal" parties here (including my own wedding) and never wore a tie for any of them

I said "should". Not " have to"

Again only what I was told
What they mean is no Lady Gaga t-shirts or bintang wifebeaters
They mean "smart"
That's in Jakarta anyway

I said "should". Not " have to"

Well, it is getting better now.
But someone said this just about a month ago :p

I cannot recall any official Indonesian government document mandating the wearing of a tie. Moreover, I've seen several KITAS documents featuring men photographed without ties. However, it's worth noting that wearing a tie isn't inherently negative; the concern lies in acquiring one only for a singular occasion.

As for the red background on KITAS, I suspect this may be a result of their backdated system, and it's likely to transition to a plain white or off-white background in due course.
Indonesian consular around the world seem to be adopting more standardized practices, e.g a plain white or off-white background. Advancements in technology and changes in digital / printing methods have allowed increased flexibility in choosing background colours other than red.

Kitas has needed red background for at least 14 years. My first one they asked for red.

And about the tie you often gloat about how English is not your first language so you might not understand fully the context or meanings.

As you told us you are from Indonesia but not Indonesian

Must. Should. Mandatory. Necessary

I was told pre covid one time that "Bapak please wear a tie for your photo"
I took some with a shirt and tie and no jacket. Nothing was said
Nowadays I just wear a normal work shirt

I think they just mean wear a formal outfit
Like Batik. Long sleeve is formal short sleeve is casual

Anyway here comes Pantomime with Google wiki definitions of English words. Splitting hairs to try troll
