Indonesian's tax

I guess your agent made you confused . A KITAS is a process that we do at 'Kantor Imigrasi' . NPWP is a different process that we can do at 'Kantor Pajak' . Assuming your 'BJPS' is 'BPJS Health" , it is another different process done at the BPJS Office . About the need of NPWP , we discussed already in this thread . The BPJS Health , in my view , is mandatory to foreigners working more than 6 months and not available to the other foreigners (but some foreigners with KITAP sponsored by their Indonesian spouses have succeeded in getting it) .

The more you ask , the more money she earns , so of course .
The bad side of using an agent is that you probably end up not knowing the legal rules .

Yes sorry Marcus force of habit been here so long yes splitting hairs I am talking about the process KITAS for work including IMTA etc

I know these days people like to split it into 2 one for resident one for working. Correctly. But to me it's just the annual thing they do for me to live and work.

And no she doesn't charge me more. Anyway it's like a few hundred thousand only for a SIM.

Maybe it's just a favour since I used her for so long and give her many clients. Anyway I'd pay if she asked it's one thing less to worry.

Again talking personal experience. Everyone has their own way.

I have BJPS and my own private Allianz plan 1.7jt a month

During COVID they said you had to have your own insurance to renew etc

And for the sake of a few hundred thousand I am in the BJPS just so I have it. Never used it no idea even how to?

The 3 things personally I am on top of here

Visa and work permits
Banking
Rent

Keep those up to date and your nose clean and you will be ok in this wonderful country.

Not only have been told that we don't need one but have been refused one.
Is this quite recent? It would be helpful if you could share any written proof, like an email or a message from an official Immigration communication channel, if any available. Unfortunately what an officer officer said to someone can not be used to defend their case later when needed.

It was a few years ago and was done verbally. I'm not sure what is expected. Once someone says no, I'm not going to ask again everyday. My income is not taxable anyway so they have absolutely nothing to gain even if they gave me one.

Getting NPWP is relatively easy quick and painless.
If you asked and they said don't need them I also wouldn't stress. It's not something they necessarily come down on especially for your such positions retired not earning etc.

As I've previously mentioned they don't ever really bother to check on you too much even if you do have one. Just accidentally miss a number when they ask for it and see if they ever get back to you for the correct one.

Even my bank don't seem to care. As long as the box is filled and ticked they are happy.

Such an anticlimax the first year when I went in with my card and the certificate and even the CD DVD it came with.

Then I used to just show a photo of the card

Then I just gave the number

Now I just give what I can remember I think the number is.

Same when they demand my UK tax number. I remind them I left UK in 1992 and never had one never will.

In the end I give them what I can remember of my National Insurance number and they seem happy.

I've never really heard of any bule getting a sudden huge tax bill backdated etc.

Every year I get some blah blah Bahasa letter and translation just says reminder to pay / file etc and one year said I had to pay 100rb for late.

My agent said ignore it. I never paid it they never asked or reminded me.

I do remember years ago as a director there was a thing were to be a director you had to declare a minimum monthly salary of $2,500 and pay the tax of 10% i.e $2,500 for the year.

Not to be confused with the $100 / $1,200 DPKK Manpower one to get IMTA etc.

So tax here is a strange grey area. Even when you try and be legal they just don't really seem to care or want to get involved. I guess they suspect that we will all be smart and have that sorted or it's too complicated for them with most people being paid offshore.

Respect the rules and keep your head down and they don't seem too bothered really.

But Jakarta really not many working WNA these days. Walk the malls or sit in hotel lobby and very rare to see another one of us. Even those staying for business hotel guests etc.

Jakarta pre COVID was shipping mining blue chip CEO etc then the economy recession cuts to those industries and people going back to Europe for COVID. Then the rest moved to Bali. Supposedly for the quiet simpler life.

Except now they all look more stressed and greyer and wrinkled than me. All complaining about traffic and rain and how incredibly expensive Bali is. More than Jakarta.

Anyway. Tax.
The end

Taxation is complex, and not many people enjoy paying taxes. However, having accurate information rather than just presenting information in the way of what people want to hear is essential to avoid potential penalties in the future.

Major international accounting firms like PwC and Deloitte publish pocket guides of Indonesian taxation that are freely available online and easy to find. While these resources are helpful, their simplified nature may not fully address the detailed questions people often have about tax matters.

This is another example of professional tax guidance, particularly from an Indonesian and U.S. perspective. It offers more comprehensive and in-depth information compared to the brief pocket guides provided by the Big Four firms.

That’s the problem. You also won’t get any responses and solutions from these firms about possible loans or gifts between WNI & WNA spouses and what‘s the best way to tackle this on the yearly tax reporting. Not that a tax officer will give you a clear answer btw.

PWC and D&T are professional entities out to line their own pockets with their own advice but it's still your fault if they mess up. Caveat emptor

Caveat emptor generally does not apply to professional services in the same way it does to private sales of goods. If you are paying for the services, you are entitled to rely on the professional’s expertise, and the provider is under a legal duty to exercise reasonable care and skill. Let alone if you are talking about big four international consultancy such as PwC and Deloitte.
