People are easily (en)raged and influenceable. But it can’t just be bad education or ignorance and vacuousness. This society shows some characteristics that also explain quite a lot:
- Social influence is strong, there are many explicit but also hidden norms and values. And Adat rules or laws are often seen as more important than the civil laws.
- Conformism (or conformity) is automatic and deemed important. People don’t like trouble makers, don’t raise your head above the mowing field.
- Obedience to authority is extreme. With that I don’t mean obeying the law (as in traffic rules) but putting responsibility for your actions on a higher authority. Cf. the interview with the guy who destroyed the coral by blast fishing and said he wasn’t doing anything wrong since it was not against his religion (no stealing, killing or lying).
