Indonesia Names Islamist Leader a Suspect in Pornography Case
JAKARTA —
Indonesian police on Monday named an Islamist leader as a suspect in the exchange of pornographic messages and photos, a new legal threat to a cleric who helped organize mass Muslim rallies against Jakarta's former Christian governor.

Habib Rizieq, a firebrand cleric who heads the hardline Islamic Defenders Forum (FPI), has also been made a suspect in a separate investigation over allegations he insulted the secular state ideology in the Muslim-majority nation.

President Joko Widodo appears to be taking a tougher stance against fundamentalism and has said he would not tolerate any individuals or organizations that undermine the secular state ideology "Pancasila", or threaten Indonesia's tradition of pluralism.

Religious and political tensions have soared in the last six months with Islamist-led rallies targeting the Jakarta governor, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, an ethnic Chinese Christian who was jailed this month for insulting the Koran.

The government recently moved to disband Hizb ut-Tahrir, an Islamist group that calls for a state based on sharia and also backed the protests against Purnama, an ally of Widodo.

Rizieq, who has spent years preaching conservative Islamic values, is accused of violating Indonesia's strict anti-pornography laws by exchanging graphic messages and nude pictures with a woman.

Jakarta police spokesman Argo Yuwono confirmed Rizieq had been made a suspect, meaning the case is likely to go to court.

"The main crime is participating in and transmitting pornographic content," Yuwono said in a telephone text message.

Rizieq's lawyer, Sugitmo Atmo Pawiro, denied the allegations, saying they had been fabricated by supporters of Purnama.

Rizieq is currently overseas after flying to Malaysia and then to Saudi Arabia. He has not returned to Indonesia despite repeated summons for questioning by police.

His lawyer denied that the cleric had fled Indonesia because of his legal troubles.

An FPI spokesman said the legal complaints against Rizieq were "unfounded".

"This has all been engineered to criminalize the clerics," said Novel Bamukmin, head of the FPI's Jakarta chapter.

"The police need to investigate who really produced and distributed that transcript," he said.

Rizieq served prison terms in 2003 and 2008 for violence and disrupting public order.

I am suspicious when the authorities appear to be conscientiously carrying out their duties.

Tit for tat. You got one of my guys, I'm gonna get one of yours. Maybe next time you'll think twice before you play this game.

It could possibly be a great day for diplomacy if Indonesia could arrange for the trial to be heard there

I heard police (Tito?) stating on TV there were already three urgent requests sent out for him to come back from his (now very extended hajj) trip and report to the local authorities.

Not sure if he's still in SA or whether the rumors he went to Malaysia are true, but his lawyer stated it would be advisable for him not to come back, to protect Indonesia from disorder and riots etc. Very noble and patriotic.

According to his lawyer, he is still in SA. He will return to Indonesia after Ramadan now. Didn't actually say which ramadan. His lawyer also said that upon his return the White Revolution will begin. Not with physical actions but legal one in the courts. He also stated that at this time sharia law could not be implemented in Indonesia but as soon as Jokowi is defeated in 2019 it will be in place.

I guess stay tuned for the revolution. I do not believe for one moment the followers will not get physical and just wait for court decisions. War may be on the horizon.

This, and also he got too big for his britches. He and his organization were just a bunch of street thugs, a group of useful idiots for the police and army to use whenever convenient. But then they started gaining legitimacy and Mr. Rizieq was overcome with illusions of grandeur. He saw himself as a spiritual leader of all Indonesian muslims.

Then came out the chat transcript, and really there can only be one source from where it came from, and he was brought crashing back down to earth.

They have got too big for their boots and become arrogant, maybe got beyond useful and become an embarrassment to their sponsors

I am rather torn on this issue. I think the law is draconian and small-minded, but I feel the same way about HR himself. He deserves prison for his mistreatment of Ahok and for leading a fascist organization, but this law seems to be the only charge that can stick. I seem to recall @atlantis saying that once Ahok had been named a suspect, Ahok's fate had been sealed. Hopefully the same is true for HR. FPI & its looney allies will raise a ruckus, but HR is clearly guilty. I keep hoping that someday the TNI will crush FPI & other anti-pancasila "ormas" at the behest of Jokowi.

I agree with you. Rizieq is not a muslim leader to be follow by the muslim in Indonesia. I am shame with what happend to Ahok. I wonder should I become WNI? But I already commited to do it. Do or die I will stick to doing good thing even against my own "brother". What is right will always be right to everyone.

a friend of mine used to joke around...

" careful if you play hide and seek with us, Ya Habib, you may be missing forever"
And I said

Amen Brother

@nd_eric_77,
I said that in relation to pasal 156/156a KUHP (Blasphemy Law), not in relation with any cases whatever the charges are. I said that I am not aware of (and I think there is none) of any case where a suspect had been charged with pasal 156/156a and that the court case ended by an acquittal. There is so much pressure with religion that systematically judges pronounce a guilty verdict in order not to create havoc.

For any other type of charges I wouldn't have necessarily said the same. As an example, a few years ago I've been charged, tried and finally acquitted of the charges I was accused of.

Now something -probably not so- amazing, sickening and disgusting has popped up again.

A video of a Chinese Indonesian kid who gets 'interrogated' by some FPI thugs in a semi official capacity, after he allegedly insulted Rizieq.

It seems the mother is there but did not dare to intervene. (Can't really blame her.) No police around of course. If you see the (also physical) intimidation of the minor; I would sue their @sses or hire some Ambonese....well, probably both.

Btw, there has been a similar case with (Muslim!) woman about a month ago. They made her sign a statement in which she was forced to apologize...

This is where my arrogance probably could have gotten me killed

After reading the case on internet.. the kid also did some mistake.. he idiotly post his address on social media and challenge the guy to come to his place..

The truth is the kid is cocky as a kid will do.. but the grown up should know better.. instead they act like they're right and they brought up the race and religion issues

I heard that the mom was fired and they're forced to moved out from their kontrakan because the landlady and the boss afraid that FPI will come to their place.. So sad for this country

Rizieq's lawyer has stated that Rizieq would return if not taken by force upon his arrival. I guess they think this is negotiable. Hopefully not and the Police show they are in charge and not the FPI. If Rizieq gets back within the outstretched hands of his thugs, he will be harder to take and the publicity it will generate will insite their followers even more. Got to take him at the plane.

The family has been staying at a police station for protection. The lady is single with 7 children.

A Balines business woman* has started a donation program to help the family out and get them away from their environment. She asked people to donate no more than 500.000 per person. Until now (the program ends Sunday, today), almost 250 million rupiah was collected. So it is a huge success.
