Muggings happen but most of the incidents were not reported as victims did not want to go to the police. Of the few that filed police report, how many got into the news that we read?

Anyway, even if you think your neighborhood is safe, don’t go out alone to exercise early in the morning. Last Friday, a Taiwanese expat in Cikarang - Bekasi was knocked unconscious and robbed. He didn’t know what hit him, i.e. he didn’t see it coming nor the person who did it. The victim had a 3-5 cm depression on his skull at the back of his head, he is now in Taiwan for further treatment and medical check-up. This story was relayed to me by someone who knew this man.

Long time ago, robbers would ask first, now they hit first… this is alarming. Perhaps if you hear of any incidents not reported in the newspaper, you can share the story here on Indonesia Crime Watch thread. The purpose is to know what to avoid, where crimes are happening, and when. If only there's a mobile apps to do the job...

Cikarang – Bekasi is a large area, can you narrow it down any ?

I'll have to ask the man who told me the story as I don't know the victim... anyone from Cikarang who heard about it?

No. I haven't. In Cikarang there are living many expats. They also live in quite good communities/housing complexes.

maybe that would raise the risk- walking round with a smartphone out looking at the app to see if there are any crime risks where you are... and WHAPP, a smack to the back of the head with a blunt instrument and phone nicked.

Mobile apps are not the answer to everything .
Walking with head up looking around and being observant of one's surroundings and potential threats would be far safer.

I don't put much stock in second-hand, unsubstantiated stories.

If necessary, I will check before I leave the house, not while I am on the road, especially walking. The idea is to be aware and to plan ahead, but you need up to date information. In this case, my message is to avoid exercising alone early in the morning when it is still quiet and almost nobody around, or bring some company or your dog with you.

thanks for posting, I guess we'll wait, but not hold out breathes, for the apology from Waarmstrong.

Waarmy doesn't need to make an apology. He made a general statement (above) which (fwiw) I agree with.

The OP later found information to substantiate HIS post...that's very useful....but has nothing to do with Warmy's generalisation.

Hide those tattoos.

http://bali.coconuts.co/2016/09/27/another-woman-violently-slashed-bali-time-near-bali-toll-road

The woman earlier this month was said to have been wearing shorts during her attack, and now the woman assaulted this time had a tattoo on her shoulder, local media has been quick to point out—though we can’t know the motive of the assailant for sure at this time. We hope these kinds of violent attacks in Bali against women aren't becoming the new normal, because they're clearly physically threatening, but they also seem to be promoting an attitude of victim blaming.

The article doesn't say anything about Bekasi, only Jakarta, although that could be because of journalism "excellence".

I'm always a bit distrustful of such theft reports. How often have we seen reports of robbery and theft that happen in "nakal" areas, or in sleazy hotel rooms, that surprisingly get reported as happening somewhere else.

Now we know it was reported that a guy got mugged. And yes, pardon me for being initially sceptical of the veracity of a vague, second-hand story coming to me over the internet.

Pardon me again for still being skeptical of the conclusions drawn from the report:

1. Many muggings are not reported as victims did not want to go to the police.

2. Of the few muggees who file police reports, few get reported in the news that we read? (This one it turns out did make the news, just not the local news, it seems.)

3. Based on this incident, your neighborhood is probably not safe,

4. Don’t go out alone to exercise early in the morning.

5. You should be alarmed because robbers who used to ask first, now hit first.

6. We need a mobile street crime reporting app.

This has been happening for months and this woman is one of at least half a dozen women attacked in this manner.

unfortunately here in bali attacks on women with shorts riding scooters is on the rise in the recent past, guys riding around with knives have left terrible wounds on their victims , in the denpasar / kuta areas , its very sad . A lot of women now are wearing sarongs to avoid attention from these crazies! could it be because of the increased radicalization on these Islands ?

this is generally not about theft , but non conservative dress.

Yes, I think that the constant influx of Muslim Javanese into Bali is causing the problem attacking the non conservative values of tge island. Others may say Bali can not be threatened by Islamist overtaking but, look around. It is creeping deeper and deeper into the Bali society.

I understand why you felt waarmstrong had offended me, I appreciate your thoughtfulness. Davita is right, nevertheless, it is a general statement, so no apology is necessary. For me, I imagine we are having dinner on the same table (you, me, waarmstrong, and Davita), I started the conversation, then waarmstrong opined (if he is not being concise) “I will not believe the story if I were you, what if the story he told you was fabricated by him or by the person who told him, it’s second-hand and unsubstantiatedâ€. Under this circumstance, I can imagine no one will feel slighted or offended.

Anyway, if only first-hand experience is to be shared here by 200+ members, I don’t think there will be any story (actually, I hope there will be none from forum members, ever). If we share stories already in the news, it can still be helpful as there may be some who haven’t read about the news. But I think sharing second-hand stories should also be encouraged as I believe there are many cases not reported to the police or in the newspaper. There are all kinds of reasons for not going to the police, including the victim’s race, religion, social status, and issues with time, money, etc.

Anyone else here been the victim of street crime ??

The nearest I have come was on Jalan Kemang Raya circa 1997. I was riding home after having Sunday lunch when I felt the scooter pull to the right, when I looked behind me I could see that the girl I had on the back was in a tug of war with the pillion of another bike for her handbag. I yelled and swerved the much heavier Vespa into their exposed legs causing him to swerve and the pillion to release the bag. I tried to give chase along Jalan Kemang Timor but their bike was much faster and I soon lost them.

Uber driver couldn't find my house (and the big black gate and the house number in consecutive order), so he asked me to wait on the side of the street. While i waited, a motorcycle driver zoomed past me and grabbed my phone. I held on tight but soon had to make a choice of letting go or get dragged on the bike. I got a new Xiaomi Note 3 now....
