I subscribe to International Living and it consistently says Panama, Ecuador, Costa Rica are the top 3 retirement locations...Mexico comes in there but Bali isn't even mentioned.
Recently they included Danang in Vietnam....so I'm going there in a couple of weeks (cruise ship) and will check it out.

Of course this doesn't apply to those who are not retired and need employment income...that's another story.

Every time we pass the US consulate at Jln. Merdeka, wife always wonders about the huge building right behind the consulate. I always say that the US is preparing a nice dorm/safe rooms for us should anything happen...

Thailand, Laos and Vietnam are great alternatives,,, I believe Bali and many other islands are safe for now.
