If it all went to hell in a hand basket.

The British Embassy when I first came here had a warden system designated your area, if a problem they would contact you are give advice, the Embassy seems to have got more aloof of late, gone are the days you could go to the old embassy and have a beer and some yummy ham and eggs. That's progress

The "emergency tree" or whatever they called it has probably gone the way of technological process. The US Embassy used to do that too - but now they figure everyone can sign up for emails (and, in urgent cases, SMS's) so they don't bother with the old-fashioned warden system.

They still have that warden system at the French embassy and seem quite proud of it. Except it's limited to Jakarta proper, not greater Jakarta. Go figure...

Good for the French El G, if the wifi goes down the rest of us are on are own

Pusp- my GoBag is on my to-put-on-a to-do list.. but at least I know where all my documents are... or I did before I headed out last weekend.. hubby has had his mitts on them since, so they could be anywhere

Lol. We have a safe, so I know our stuff is in the safe. WHERE in the safe is another matter (it is jam-packed with keepsakes, including such bizarre items as an actual scratch-n-sniff card from a first-run showing of Pink Flamingos).

If things go completely sideways, my immediate family and I will do our best to repatriate to USA via Singapore. We may end up leaving behind a lot of our belongings, but could eventually arrange for their shipment. Jakarta-based in-laws would likely prefer to go to stay with relatives in Melbourne due to relative proximity.

I don't think indonesia is going tits up just yet, might be a few broken heads after prayers, the folks round here don't care about Ahok, why cos, we are in Tangerang

If things get dicey, I'll hole up at home for awhile waiting to see what happens. Others can go out for me if I need something. With all this reporting to the police you would think they would be sitting on your doorstep but I probably would trust them the least.

When we were to-ing and fro-ing Indonesia and Vancouver on Sosbud visas our plan B was to live in Penang. To achieve that we acquired MM2H visas for 10 years. When we committed to Bali, bought a villa and gained a retirement Kitas/Kitap, we went to KL and revoked our MM2H and recouped our MYR Fixed Deposit.

Now we have this issue in Jakarta I'm feeling I may have been too hasty...but Malaysia does offer 90 day tourist visas so we would likely go to Penang and see how the problems in Indonesia pan out.
We could go back to Vancouver but we burned our bridges there by selling everything and the house prices are way out of reach now. A one-bedroom furnished apartment in the city would rent at least CDN$30,000 a year....and now Trump is the President-elect many Americans are considering a move to Canada which could increase the demand for accommodation.

Living in Bali does offer less exposure to the problems in Java, as dafluff commented, but who can tell if/when the hordes come to Bali to create more chaos.

My wife's gym-pal owns one of those big ocean-going Phinisi boats that take divers around the islands of the archipelago. Maybe we will all get on board and sail to where-ever the wind takes us...Hawaii?
I wouldn't want to go south as the Ozzies might declare us refugees and turn us back.....or lock us up on an island.....:hand::ban:

Too funny.

Hey, I thought it was a reasonably interesting question.

Certainly those of us who were here back in the days when the US Embassy used to recommend to us that we keep open tickets out of the country in a safe place at home, and stock up with enough food and water to last for 2 weeks without leaving the house, can at least wrap our heads around the idea of preparing for bad stuff.

Of course it won't happen. But that's what I said about "President Trump" too, so you never know. There is no harm in being prepared, as long as you don't let fear govern your life. Heck, even the First Aid/CPR course I took recommended that we keep a go-bag by the door. Not that I've ever made go-bags; it is one of those things on my "things to do" list that never gets done. But I do keep flashlights in every room in case of power outages.

First aid kits (especially if you have a spouse who likes to play with power tools) and flashlights are reasonable precautions; "go bags" hanging on the exterior door knob, not so much.

I know it's not uncommon for Canadians to trace problems to an origin south of the border, but come on, a mass migration of disaffected Democrats to Vancouver aggravating a house bubble??? Wear a hat; could be you are getting too much sun in Bali.

Google 'Canadian Immigration website crashes' .... due amount of Americans accessing it after the election vote.....Republicans and Democrats!

Of course not all Americans would be allowed to migrate...they'd have to pass a test to say "Eh!'....and thank an ATM after making a cash withdrawal.

BTW it's raining here in Bali...not so much sun but we had an earthquake.....so I'm still shaking.

Happy Thanksgiving...don't eat too much.

Later reports debunked that crash cause speculation. Made for a funny story, but just not true.

If I moved to Canada it would be because Canada is a great place to live with, at least at present, progressive, intelligent leadership, not because I am fearful about the course of American politics.

Canada is beautiful and is a nice place to live or visit but I think with the current mindset of moving out of the US, I would choose someplace warmer with a lot less snow. Like Cuba or the Caribbean somewhere. Maybe head back to Guam. The military need for the place let's them thumb their noses at Washington.

A lot of Americans and Canadians retire in Panama as it is very welcoming....although can be a bit humid. I visited some years ago and regret not buying into that as it has become quite the retiree haven....with consequent increase in property prices.

So true ... my cousin lives there and loves it. He got a great deal on a huge house a few years ago, apparently. (I've never visited and don't know if I'll ever make it there, but it sure sounds great from my cousin's description.)

Looking at Panama and Costa Rica would be a bit late in the game now, yes. I like 'em both but there are good alternatives in Latin America or the Caribbean. (Of course not that many have pensionado programs.)

I hear Uruguay is the place to go in S America as an expat / retirement destination.
