Here we go again, the "Human Rights" party train departing ignorance to the undiscovered country. "All aboard!"

It's very interesting how expats (yes I'm a bule, former expat, soon to be expat again) express their negative opinions of the local politics or culture in things that don't affect them in any way, such as Indonesian police woman wearing a hijab.

Firstly let's get to the very basics. Why do people in Indonesia wear clothes? It's actually warm enough that they are not needed. The answer is very important to the entire subject actually. How would we be able to tell if a person was a police man / woman if they were naked? Well in many jungle tribes, clothes are minimal to say the least and status or position is often indicated by accessories like headwear, jewelry, etc. So how about naked police that wear a police hat? No that wouldn't work because where would they put the handcuffs.

What is the western perception of proper clothing? Is the west free from Christian infuence in government? Isn't that a Bible people swear upon in court? Wow such a religious bias! And what version of the Bible is it, Catholic, Morman, Church of England, Greek Orthodox, etc. They are all different, not just the language but the content that is included or excluded. Is that "In God we trust" on the US dollar biased against non-believers? Why doesn't the US dollar say "In Buddha we trust", or perhaps "In Jesus the son of God we trust"? Is your brain starting to tinggle?

So now you find yourself living in a Muslim majority country (Indonesia) and you complain that a Muslim woman police officer wants to wear her required religious accessory (hijab) and you huff and puff about it.

When it all boils down, there's a lot more going on than a human rights or cross cultural understanding issue, but you have to open your eyes if you want any hope of seeing it.

I've been lurking on this thread for a bit. I'll say this: either extreme end is informed by a desire to control women. Coercive male relatives who may do much more than just encourage are on the one end, and at the other we have those who are so freaked out by the threat of coercion that they ban the garments.

This is illogical. If the problem is coercion then ban coercion, not the garments. By banning the garments we've also indulged in coercive practices ("choose between your religion and an education"). We've given these garments a life of their own when they're really very simple pieces of clothing.

30 years ago, I cannot imagine Indonesia could become an Islamic Republic someday. It seemed impossible, so I decided to invest here. Some expats even married locals and have children here. But now, it is NOT impossible anymore as you can see the growing religiosity amongst the population. I did not come here to invest, retire and live under sharia laws. Non-Muslim expats married to Indonesians also do not want their children and grandchildren to live in a theocratic Indonesia. So we care about Indonesia like an Indonesian cared about his country. The only way to preserve secularism and pluralism in this country is to stop the growing religiosity and the Arab influence. Saudi Wahhabism has managed to sneak into Indonesia and is a pain in the collective bum for the country (And the world).
That country's schools, for the uninformed, is where the WA porn king learnt how to become a prize dick and where he's hiding away from porn charges at the moment.
Again, for the less than clever, he was last known to be staying at a mid priced hotel next to the Grand Mosque of Makkah. The room rates there are more per night than many/most Indonesians get paid per month, but he's managing to scrape by .. or some bent bastard is paying his way.
