The locals have got richer and bought cars. Before the pandemic the Batur area didn't have many hotels, now there's loads of them because the banks lent money like there was no tomorrow. There's some overflow from the overcrowded areas to the south, but most of the occupancy in these hotels is taken up by local tourists at weekends only, where they go to drink alcohol and let the kids have a riot.
