Ukraine and Russia may be at war, but thousands of their citizens have made the Indonesian resort island of Bali their home following the conflict. About a year after the war started, Chandni Vatvani takes a look at how Bali has become a refuge for people from both countries.

Normally the wealthy families sending off their offspring. Draft dodging at it's norm.

I had the displeasure of working in Russia on a couple of occasions ,It does not please me to see their citizens here ,with what horrors are going on in Ukraine ,women children the old maimed or killed .

Not much worse than VN, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen, Libya, etc....
Did a few missions in Moscow also, a bit too "rough" to my liking.
At the resort I stay there are 3 couples of Russian, same profile, 30 / 45 married 1 or 2 kids. The profile that risks being drafted for a war that is not theirs.
I understand them.
BTW, all proper, normal families saying good morning. Too bad none of them can speak English, could be interesting.
Met a young bloke one evening in a bar, 27 / 30 perfect English. His words "I can fight to defend my country, but not to invade others"

You really can't blame citizens for their governments actions. I'm sure some support the war (or are shady people, or both) but the majority are probably just trying to live their own life. It's not like you are going to be very loud about not supporting your government when you live in a country such as Russia. Westerners are especially spoiled about being able to critisize the government. I've seen the shock on certain people faces when I critisize the US even in private.

A recent poll by the bbc suggested around 80 % of the population supported Herr Putin , believe it or not .

Normal russians could not afford to live in bali long term , I would suggest most of them here have access to " dirty money ".

I choose to keep my distance from such people .

The Russians in Bali are not your atypical Russians from Russia

These ones have the dirty money and arrogance to go with it. That's why they're disliked so much

Average Russian can barely afford to eat let alone a month in Canggu

That is perfectly fine and it's probable that you are right. I just personally don't like painting with such a broad brush. I've traveled all around the world over the years and have met some interesting people from many different backgrounds. Some that appeared to be "stereotypical" but a lot more that were not. With that being said, it's not like a ran a background check on any of them. If something (or someone) makes you uncomfortable there is no reason to subject yourself to it (them).

Indonesian government needs to be open-minded to such kind of Immigrants. Indonesia does not have benefit, social security system so it has very little to loose but something to gain as they are paying to reside in Indonesia.
They are not to be mistaken with illegal immigrants, failed asylum seekers whose main intention is to abuse Indonesia as a transit country to cross to neighbouring countries such as Australia or to be transferred to other developed countries with good benefit, social security systems aiming for benefit social security for the entirely family while never contribute to the systems.

It might also be good for Indonesian development and Indonesian Economy as a whole. Russian ethnic, diaspora, people especially those who manage to immigrate to other countries are very competitive. I believe in general they are more competitive than Indonesian people in general. Just look at scientists, athletes, Artists and businessmen who many of them have resided in the US, UK for instance.
There are already evidence around the world where a country built upon competitive immigrants, In Indonesia with Chinese, Indian Ethnics. Other countries, Singapore, Malaysia, South Africa (English, Dutch, etc), Brazil with Japanese background, Israel etc.

Also do not forget these russian ukrainian people are fleeing from the countries arguably for a good cause. Otherwise they could be sent to the front line to fight.

It's likely a lot of that support is/was due to the propaganda they've been fed. Not so unlike what the UK and US were feeding their masses in the early aughts.

I agree with this 100%. All governments are guilty to some degree. Some more than others.

I think some time spent in the the "Ruski" motherland may temper sympathies for the supporters of Herr putin , seeing the the life of working people ,facing the mafia on occasion etc etc , may be good medicine . We are not talking about government propoganda only personal experience .

uk origin , I worked in many ex communist countries , Russia "by far" being the most difficult , for the reasons mentioned previously .

Personally I have seen quite some obnoxious behavior by these ‘tourists‘ in the south of Turkey and Egypt’s Red Sea and Bali. It goes from very bad behavior if there’s food (buffet) involved to drinking issues, treating staff and starting fights.

If it’s not a pattern, it does stand out and tends to make one believe all these people are like that. Having said that, we visited Saint Petersburg and the people were extremely friendly, nice and well behaved.

"Tourists" are hardly ever indicative of any group as a whole. Maybe the people with the money to travel are just a-holes.

Chinese and Russians seem to have been reported as some of the more obnoxious tourists.

I’ve only been to Moscow once, almost 20 years ago and found it pleasant enough. Hopefully things will improve once Putin is gone.

It’s by far the longest visa application I’ve ever filled out.

Really?

I don't know about this evidence? In the Netherlands a lot of first, second and third generation Marocco people living there ... and the majority of the Dutch people would like them to leave .. they will not say that out loud .. well some do actually ..

Well, I am not quite sure how the parent, grand parents of people above come to the Netherlands.
Do they come though competitive route such as higher education, getting the highly skilled jobs, investments, etc. If it is the same route with immigrants in Calais Crossing the channel after wandering across Europe ending up in France try crossing the channel using a small boats or the back of the lorries to the UK, it is a different case
Also if they are the third generation, they are likely already the Dutch Citizen. I am not quite sure how come other Dutch people would like or ask them to leave if they have the same right with anyone else in the Netherlands ??
If you are asking evidence ? The links above the Russian Immigrant in the US and the UK. In Indonesia (Chinese, Indians background). Also other countries, Singapore (Chinese, Indians), Malaysia (Chinese, Indians), South Africa (British, Dutch, etc), Brazil with Japanese background, Israel (Jews from Europe) etc.
The quality of immigrants come through competitive routes such as Investments, Highly skilled jobs, Higher Education, etc are entirely different with the one come from the back of the lorries, small boats, or smuggled etc.
