The interactive brokers website is secure. I checked. Turn on your VPN and you are safe for all data leaving your computer.

You get the warning, maybe because you didn't clear your cache by clearing chrome's browser data.

If the computer on the other end is compromised the VPN will not help you because at that point everything is put back together. VPN secures your traffic but only between the two points. If the other point is not secured VPN won't help. Someone can takeover a site and redirect you to their page which will give you the SSL error. The browser is not seeing the SSL that it expected to see at this point and warns you. Even with VPN the data is clear at that point and can easily read and tracked.

Yeah, this error message is the reason why I still have no account there. Does this error message also pop up on your devices if you go on their website without VPN or is it just me who has this problem? I would be surprised since I already tried different devices, browsers and WiFis.

Since I don’t want to take the risk regarding that error message: Anyone has a solution how to invest into international stocks when living in Indonesia? Are you using Interactive Brokers via app or do you use another broker?

If they can't keep somethiing as simple as an SSL certificate up to date, it makes me wonder about how safe their day to day operations are. App or not there is a big red flag. Up to you on what you want to do.

Yeah, I agree with you on that. And I am really surprised because this is a quite big and popular broker which is active in many, many countries. In my country of origin they also have a quite good reputation.

As I posted before, the connection is secure. On my phone and pc no warning.

Did so. I also tried with a brand-new phone that I just bought some weeks ago and via mobile network (not the usual wifi => different IP). This message always shows up.

I just tried the website from my computer and the certificate I get is valid and the same as shown by Samoerai. Something is amiss somewhere. I have no answer as to why you are getting an invalid certificate warning from all of you devices.

I think he said he tried that. I'm sure he will respond. Router doesn't make sense either but I guess anything is possible.

You can set up a broker account in your home country. Another option is set up a bank account in Singapore and use it for trading stocks. I do both and can access them from Indonesia, no VPN needed.

Exactly, I tried that (call up the website by mobile phone). The mobile phone was also not connected to my router, I used the mobile network - but the warning still shows up. The only thing that the devices have in common is my google account. But I doubt that the google account can lead to such a certificate warning/error message.

I don´t think that it depends on the island/region in Indonesia whether or not this warning shows up. But I will ask a neighbor tomorrow if he is able to reach the website without this certificate message.

Thank you. Yes, I have a broker in my home country. I had two. But one canceled my account last year because they changed their policy and do not accept customers from outside the EU anymore. Since you never know if the other broker might changes his mind as well, I want to be prepared and, therefore, I am looking for a broker that operates here in Indonesia/South East Asia. I also don´t want to put all my eggs in one basket

Interesting case. I noticed that the settings for "region" on my laptop and smartphone are still set for my home country in Europe. So, I took my wife's phone with settings for "Indonesia" and checked the website "Interactive brokers". No warning. The connection is secure.

There are a dozen reasons why the 'SSL-handshake' would fail.

You could check the settings for internet on your devices. "Settings > type in Internet options > content" and check the boxes for SSL certificates. Option also available is "clear".

Thanks for the information regarding those banks in Singapore.

Not telling the bank in the home country could have disadvantages...at least if you are from Germany since they will automatically deduct German taxes on capital gains if you cannot prove that you live and that you are taxable in another country.

Unless you’re an active currency trader that’s rather peanuts of course. I think the coming Bitcoin halving is somewhat more interesting. Amazingly volatile currently.

And it will be interesting to see how Tesla develops. A cheaper model 2 would do a lot of good but how long will it take? Also, many fish in that pond, like the Renault 5 , VW ID.2 and quite some Stellantis models. And the Chinese are coming (although I doubt it in the current political and economic climate). But it’s still a growth stock, that means that news is almost always bad news.
