Getting old sucks.
'Getting old sucks' is the truth...but, on reflection, being young isn't that great either. I'd hate to be a teenager today...the life we seniors have created for the youth of today, imo...is appalling.
All they can look forward to is a competitive, narcissistic and consumerist lifestyle. This culture predominates, principally from the freedoms of the media who sell into this behavior, and the advent of social media where they can forget about other forms of interaction and social skills....and be impolite, crass and invisible.
Witness the types of TV programs we are bombarded with..king, or better phrased, queen of them is the astonishing success of 'Kardashians' ...followed by some Filipinos I'd never previously heard of...and newspaper rags with very little news but lots of scandal. Then there is doping in sports to gain quick overpaid success and notoriety ...followed by fight clubs. I suggest national service could channel that aggression more productively.....and what happened to the Peace Corps and volunteering...too nerdy?
Most of the movies today are full of violence or star wars...I see very little drama stories with great vocabulary. Virtually all comedy is slapstick or demeaning to blondes...who succeed in the end (Reese you-go-girl). Real intellectual humor or satire is unavailable in the media (Monty's Python died!), and jokes are deemed racist or sexist...except in specialist stand-up venues, hidden from the politically correct public.
All generations go through some sort of trauma, mine was WW2 and rationing, but the uncertainties of the world today, for this generation, is no exception.
So....I'm mindful that the surgery, needle punctures and pills I've had this year (2016 sucks) in no way reflects on my life over the last 79+ years...there was good and bad but mostly good by a long shot.
I just remember, and sleep soundly, to dream how great it was when I was between 40-78 years old...the best years....so far!
