Exotic fruits & vegetables

Does anyone know why there are "malang apples"? Aren't apples from American (Johnny Appleseed and all)?

I got malang apples, they were like crab apples I guess except I never really ate a crab apple so who knows.
If you had, you would remember.

These? I love these, too!

yeah, sawo. Have a big plant that loves to give me some sweet treats for a long season. Have to go slow, like eating a handful of sugar. Maybe the sweetest fruit I have ever experienced.

Far too sweet for me. It's like pure sugar. One mouthful is enough. Can you use them to cook?

I suppose you could do something with them mashed up. I always wondered if they would make a good wine? Have enough sugar already in them to convert.

Ooh a fine idea- when things have calmed down a bit round here, I will give them a whirl in the old home-brewing.

You can probably make sugar out of them. Or syrup for sure. Cook the juice with knobs of ginger to make an excellent earthy ginger syrup. Add to ice and soda water.

Note: this is in regards of sawo

The new potato one I was thinking of , I believe is Longan

It's "kelengkeng" in bahasa Indonesia. We had it in our yard, the fruits were not as big as imported stuff but sweeter.
Mixed dried flesh longan and swallow nest drinking in room temperature, not hot, is one of Chinese herbal tea. Not sure about the benefit. We replaced the swallow nest with agar-agar (seaweed version of jello) Swallow Gl*b* brand :D
We also had pomegranate (buah delima), jeruk bali (pomelo) and srikaya (sugar-apple).

Have anyone tried sukun? The fruit is eaten by folding it in batter and fry it. Taste like.. fried cassava.

Dragon fruit. Mate in Bwi has sprouted a peach tree from seed. See what happens

Im back in a few weeks with nectarine seeds. See if can get them growing in Bwi.

The problem is the fruiting, not the growing. Nectarines need time with cold temperatures in order to produce fruit. Its called "chill time". Those temperatures would generally need to be below 8 celsius or so. The plant has to spend a certain amount of time at that temperature (varies with variety). Even low chill varieties will generally need 200 hrs plus.

If you are really itching to try it, you could get a dwarf variety and stick it in a fridge once a year.

Wheres he growing is up near Licin. A lot cooler than where i am. See how it goes.

sukun is breadfruit?
Sukun (bahasa Indonesia) is what I was mentioning in #3 as being called amo, which is the name we use in the Eastern Islands. I love it, typical after diving snack for me, fried and eaten on the beach where it grows.

Does anyone familiar with juwet or kolang-kaling?
Oh Jeez! I love kolang kaling! Palm trees produce so much wonder.

By the way, we have more and more of the local variety (the red flesh one) of buah naga in Manado and they beat the imported one. I eat some almost every day. I always buy some and since my kids are not so fond of them I am forced to finish 'em.

I eat mainly fruits, veggies and raw fish, having the chance to have daily quality tuna, swordfish, marlin and snappers.

Thanks for the new vocabulary. I googled "Lansa" as I didn't know what it was, in Java we call it Langsep :D
