What is this secretive forum that I cannot access? Fun and frivolity abound?

It's not live yet as far as I know, I mean I see the tab but I don't think it's been made *official* yet. From the forum introduction:

"Speaking of moderation, we will take on a more relaxed approach by trying a little experiment with The Cage. A more private, hidden, special section of the forum, only accessible to the mightiest of mighty members, where (almost) anything goes with no moderation interference. Stay tuned for more information! When this goes live, you will be among the first to know!"

So mightiest of mighty members, whatever that means. I suspect they'll give blanket access to charter members but maybe they have a select list of people with a hard on for the politics section. We'll see soon enough.

Ah. I see said the sailor who went to sea to see the sea.

How about racist jokes? Like the one where three newly married couples were staying at the Honeymoon Hotel: an American couple, a British couple and an Australian couple. They all came down for breakfast in the morning. The American guy said lovingly to his wife, "Sugar, can you pass me the sugar, please sugar." And the British chap said tenderly to his wife: "Honey, could you pass me the honey, please honey." And the Australian bloke looked at his wife and said: "Pass the bacon, you f*****g pig."

Is that sort of thing off-limits here?

I suppose its possible; but I assume one of the things yet to be ironed out is whether or not to allow Australians to participate.

It would not be moderated in the Cage. So if you like to tell jokes that stereotype Australians and insult women, you're in luck - you can!!!!

The other nice thing about the "Cage" is if someone doesn't like your post they are free to let you know in pretty much any choice of words they like.

Having previously been a member of a forum or two that had a similar set up, I can mention that in the end some basic rules (and therefore moderation) must still occur...

p0rn
description of illegal acts, eg: drugs, b0mb making,
supportive of terrorist acts
racial vilification
accusing others of pedo acts

etc....

I dont think you can have a completely unmoderated section, but maybe you can. Just saying.

Perhaps lightly moderated, so the 'joke' above can be uttered, and then others can rightfully call the fellow poster a right plonker, and a lover of brussel sprouts and other green vegetables. He can then reply back that "yo Momma is fat" and they can say "no way, yo momma is so fat that when she went to the beach Green peace tried to drag her back into the water. and then he can say yo momma is so fat that she sat on a rainbow skittles fell out.

Fat,
Dick.
Idiot.
Burp.

etc.

This sounds good. No matter what, there needs to be an eye glancing in to control anything illegal.

Yup, you have pretty much hit the nail on the head. The Cage has a set of (pretty lenient) rules - if they haven't been posted yet, they will be shortly. The whole illegal/wishing harm on another poster sort of thing is still out of bounds.

This will be fun!!! At long last, freedom of movement!

Exactly. Anyone can be a douche... but should be ready to be called out for what one say and to be named the way it deserves.
And as it has been said previously, no lightening up on threats or promotion of obviously illegal stuff for example.

Sarcasm, jokes (good and bad), tough debating...etc will be welcome and the limits will be clearly define. Anyway, as usual, if in doubt, just buzz any of us.

However, there is something which has to be very clear in every mind: there is The Cage, and there is the Rest of the Forum. What is valid for The Cage is ONLY valid for The Cage and what happens in The Cage STAYS in The Cage. That's a mechanic that each poster will have to learn and respect as quickly as possible. Before posting, take a close look at where you are. It's pretty easy to forget where the boundaries in between two world are but it would be a mistake to do so, leaving the Mods no other choice than enforcing the full Posting Guidelines.

So, in layman's terms, in the Cage you can give someone a pile of shit and once you leave the Cage it should turn into cake.

There's always the 2008 Law on Information and Electronic Transactions (Article 27 [3]) to criminalize anyone who posts anything deemed offensive. I guess the aim of any polite forum is to set a tone that discourages unpleasant people, and to ban those who come along. Perhaps the rise of social media and its niche groups (and chat apps) has brought about a decline in trolls with nothing better to do than stir online trouble. I recall the 'Expat Forum' banned a lot of people (whenever it did its first big switch back in 2006 or 2007) in order to set a sensible tone. The Atlantis era did make the forum more professional and informative, eliminating much of the "I'm bored, look at me rant or make infantile attempts at humor" stuff. I guess this place is not aiming at consigning such stuff to a "cage" but rather allowing selected members to have a bit of leeway, without the rigorous requirements of political correctness enforced elsewhere. Or not.

We are preparing an announcement soon, it will make more sense then. It won't be set in stone though, it will be an experiment before we decide if it will be a permanent feature or not.

In the mean time, I made you Charter Member since you already made your required 10 posts yesterday :)

My personal wish would be that it turn to be what you describe in the second part of your sentence. However, before being what any of us mod/admin would like it to be it will be the reflect of what our membership are. If we manage to continue to attract quality contributors, it may be a lot of fun. If we only manage to attract predominantly the "I'm bored, look at me rant or make infantile attempts at humor" type of users, I think that I'll make only very quick visit to The Cage.

Good - What's the most intelligent thing to come out of a woman's mouth ?? ....................[Edited to say: Puspa's post, below.] :bump2:
