Media in Oz are jumping on this. But its not been news in Indo. Anyone there heard anything? Another flash in the pan thing.

It's had some articles in the English papers in the past couple weeks. Islamist want it.

Elaborate please, are you referring to the total booze ban in Surabaya ??

Yep. Nationwide one. My mrs wouldnt argue against it lol. Seems a yearly event.

A nation wide ban everywhere except ..........................................$$$ matter more to Indonesians than religion wait and see what happens when the crunch comes to effectively kill the golden goose that is Bali

Other parts of government already warned the DPR not to hurt tourism since they are working so hard to build it. Problem will end up it will be a spotty map on where you can drink and possibly who can. You may need an ID card saying you are not Muslim since it is a Muslim sponsored bill.

So freedom of choice for everyone is fucked in one foul swoop then. Thought we lived in a democracy, maybe someone should remind these head bangers of that fact.

Why, let's face it. They make the rules or have the influence to do so because the simpletons in the DPR don't want to be called bad Muslims. I doubt if it goes too far but to save face as you know is so common here, they will get something.

To many higher ups have a finger in one or more pies revolving around booze. My guess is there will be a token law, like the mini mart one, that will fade into obscurity to satisfy the whingers.
Love to know who actually owns/has a finger in the brewery near Surubaya.

Whatever they do will just increase the back yard production areas. Instead of the smoky invitation of Sate on a grill as you pass a neighborhood you will be overcome by sour mash fermenting in the warm air. There are not too many fruits here that someone couldn't ferment on their own and a pressure cooker with some copper tubing setting over a small stove would make distilling rather easy. Not suggesting that to anyone because we all know that would be illegal.

About 5 years back I was doing some "work" for a sommelier friend of mine. He was working with an active colonel from BIN as the front men for a retired police General and an active TNI General who were importing their own private label wine and spirits from military contacts in Chile and Russia, back then they had an inventory, in country, of over 1 million bottles and were flooding the (mostly North Jakarta) market with cheap booze that included the (in)proper tax stamp. With people like that in the Booze business, coupled with the fact that every single member of the DPR that I have meet, along with the majority of other government, police and military officials I have known, all loved their booze. There is no chance a full ban on booze will ever take place.

There may be more bans that really only impact the poor and they will turn to illegal homemade brews and more people will die, but the government really doesn't care about them.

Yet again the Islamic parties are forgetting this is a republic and not a Saudi Arabia type totalitarian regime.
Regardless of what is decided in Jakarta Bali wont adhere to it, need I remind anyone of the anti pornography law.

It would be interesting to know how much Saudi money is invested in these two minor religious parties,

My thoughts entirely - those bastards have a lot to answer for, especially as they were behind the attacks and persecution of the Almadihi (spelling) community a couple of years ago (as revealed by WikiLeaks)

Spot on. Be a lot of problems solved or halved without Saudi petro dollars greasing many cogs the world over.

Excellent point. I was recently in the West Kalimantan sultanate of Sambas... Local laws banned alcohol there, and even in the shoreline hotels, not a Bintang to be found. Even in the adjacent regencies, even though it was allowed, you couldn't buy a beer anywhere because none of the businesses wanted to shell out the fees for an alcohol sales license when none of the locals wanted the product.

Not to be overly concerned this is God's will and God always know's what's right for us.
