Wasn't I lucky. I flew out of Ngurah Rai at 3pm yesterday. Any later and it may have been chaos.

Wasn't it just the threat (I.e. prediction of wind) of ash towards the airport? That chance is really small.

As I posted elsewhere:

Vulcanology: The science of telling us what happened after it happened and proving it with lots of dark seismic scribbles on very expensive equipment. It is also the science of being able to say it might happen or might not happen but not when.

I have family who are booked to arrive here on Monday morning. Can a vulcanologist please tell me if that will be okay or not okay or will they fudge and say perhaps, maybe it might be okay or it might not be okay but can say with certainty on Monday night if it were okay to arrive or not have arrived on Monday morning?

My flight out of Bali was cancelled today, Friday. As you might expect, it was impossible to get through to the airline by phone & the web site was essentially worthless, as well. When the airport reopened unexpectedly midafternoon, we headed in from Ubud; got a refund for our cancelled flight & were able to book another (at twice the price) scheduled for nine pm. Its 11 and the flight is boarding now.

My flight in Jakarta ended being delayed 6 or 7 hours because Garuda was waiting for planes from Bali...

Not surprised, KW, to hear that Agung screwed up the whole system. We came back to Jakarta on Citilink. There was a Citilink or Garuda flight leaving every 1/2 hour for Jakarta all afternoon and evening. The flights were all numbered in order. There were at least 3 more after our 11 pm departure, judging from flight numbers of others I talked with in the boarding hall. Bali was a great part of our holiday except for the last day.

Having kids wait at the airport from 21.00-02.15 for a 8 hour was brutal. Original time of departure was 20.30.... we recieved the first delay of 2 hours.... but they kept delaying again and again in 45 minute increments.

A distant memory at this point; old age has its short list of advantages. On the horizon for late afternoon today is a trek to Bandar Jakarta, Ancol for a flopping fresh seafood dinner .... with 30 or so family members in tow. Should be fun, if the traffic from Jaktim north is not too bad.
