Just a thought...not meant as disrespect.

Do local educators actually go through teacher training programmes, or is a certain level of schooling sufficient for them to be hired for a teaching position?

Yes, they do. I went to Teaching and Pedagogy school to get my bachelor in TEFL (English teaching) and I got Akta IV (teaching license) that would allow me to apply for teaching in secondary schools. although I believe, my Akta is not valid anymore nowadays and I would have to take classes again to update my certification if I want to teach again.
Kindergarten teachers are also required to hold a diploma in early childhood education. All of the teachers in my son's preschool had them. The TA, however, did not

Public or private schools?

Which one? I went to private schools. My son also goes to private schools (for now). govt schools require the permit. A lot private schools require it as well, but I do know that some schools would waive that. Anyway, in 2005, teacher training program has stopped issuing the certificate I said above. I don't know what they use now as I had quit teaching as in 2004.
I read something about NUPTK. I have no idea what this is, to be honest with you.
. This was not the case when I used to teach.

Many cities have public schools where many of the teachers haven't even graduated college so I doubt that they would have any type of certification.

Indonesia does have a Teacher Training Program, sponsored by the Ministry of Education and Culture (Mendikbud), known as the "Pendidikan Profesi Guru (PPG)".

For those who are newly appointed civil servants working as teachers, it is an integral part of the "Pra-Jabatan" e.g pre-appointment process required to become a full-fledged civil servant.

I believe this program can be compared to the PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) in the UK, which is one of the pathway to attaining Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). It is typically the training in pedagogy that help individuals to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to excel in the field of education.

This is examples of information about Pendidikan Profesi Guru (PPG)
The government approved PPG training centres are typically the state funded and private universities across Indonesia.

Whether PPG is mandatory to teach at schools, especially private schools. I am not quite sure about that. Typically Private schools might have more flexibility in setting their own criteria for hiring teachers. Some private schools may prefer or require teachers to have completed PPG, while others might consider alternative qualifications and experience.

This move seems to be a step in the right direction as it emphasizes that, in addition to subject knowledge, a teacher also needs a strong foundation in pedagogy, particularly when instructing children.

The pedagogy is highly important in teaching children. Sockpuppeting for instance while it is prohibited on this forum,:cool: but it is widely acknowledged as an exceptionally effective technique for teaching toddlers and children in their early stage of learning language.

Common knowledge.

"A step in the right direction" halfway through the 3rd decade of the 21st century?? Pitiful.

So we still don't know if there is actually a requirement for QTS in Indonesia?

Sockpuppeting for instance ...

You've posted about puppetry a number of times. Something that you use in your classroom(s) one presumes...or are you promoting a service provider / teaching resource business?

There is a wide variety of sock hand puppets, marionettes. While I cannot speak for others, I believe that the little girl in the image exhibits remarkable talent through her facial expressions.

Likewise, I personally perceive the teacher in the video as a good illustration of how sock puppets can be interesting in teaching children, especially during the pivotal stage of their early development when they are beginning to learn how to read and pronounce words accurately. I have read a lot of article about this.

But you can not use sock puppet to teach adults. For language for instance it is probably better to use apps especially teaching the correct pronunciations.

So, you're not a classroom teacher, but someone who realizes that puppets can engage young learners?
