Another Lone Wolf Attack in USA

A Somali-born Ohio State University student plowed his car into a group of pedestrians on campus and then got out and began stabbing people with a butcher knife Monday before he was shot to death by a police officer. Police said they were investigating whether it was a terrorist attack. Eleven people were hurt, one critically.
The attacker was identified as Abdul Razak Ali Artan. He was born in Somalia and was a legal permanent US resident, according to a US official who wasn't authorized to discuss the case and spoke on the condition of anonymity. The FBI joined the investigation.

Sources also said authorities are looking at a Facebook post to determine if it is connected to the suspect. The post reads, "I am sick and tired of seeing my fellow Muslim brothers and sisters being killed and tortured EVERYWHERE ... I can't take it anymore. America! Stop interfering with other countries ... [if] you want us Muslims to stop carrying lone wolf attacks."

Considering most Muslims are killed by their fellow Muslims I get very puzzled by these nutters, I haven't read of any Muslims being slaughter in the US

My niece is a dental student at OSU. Luckily, she's fine and was not in the location where the attack occurred. She called her family right away to let them know she was okay.

The attacker must have been a very isolated and angry individual. Any violent act is reprehensible and tragic, but in the current climate the fact that he was acting as a "lone wolf" defending Muslims is particularly sad.

This report is something we need to take to heart. Personally, with the pockets of islamiphobia in the US and elsewhere, people are feeling pressured. They are made out to be something they are not. The media is leading a campaign to show them as the problem. The pressure itself could change a person. Could make a person tire of trying to disprove what the media says. It could in fact change a person from being a good citizen to an attacker of others.

I can see in the future these types of attacks increasing in numbers if the Muslim population is suppressed and made to all look like criminals by some of Trumps appointments for his advisers. While the acts of this individual at OSU are inexcusable, maybe we should be asking what changed him? What changed his state of mind? Perhaps there needs to be a concerted effort to get to the root causes. Trump followers do not seem to want to change from their uneducated racial blaming views so it is going to be very hard to change this.

The problem with radicalism is it tends to create a vicious circle. Radical muslims antagonizes christians, then radical christians antagonizes muslims. Without clear heads and real courage things in USA can escalate to the point of Muslim registration and probably internment. It's not unprecedented, one Trump supporter already cited Japanese internment in WWII, which was upheld by the Supreme Court in the case of Korematsu v. United States. Now that Trump and the Republican Congress are picking the 9th SCOTUS justice, similar ruling is within the realm of possibility.

The problem is fear and indifference. The deplorables are motivated by fear of the unknown, because they know nothing. The rest of Trump voters are indifferent about race, not caring enough if a racist wins as long as they think he can save their jobs.

Seems like Fox news is flooding the internet with anti Muslim stories related to trumps choices and their own twisted minds. This will cause nothing but more animosity towards law abiding Muslims from the deplorables.

It's not at all clear what motivated him to drive into a crowd and then try to stab people with a butcher knife. Not very rational or calculating.

He just moved to OSU after doing very well in junior college and may have been having transition difficulties, but that's just speculation at this point.

That's all pretty speculative at this point, something we could do with a little less of. Most people of all religious persuasions in the USA are reasonable, they don't buy into the hype any more than you. Part of me agrees with you and part of me thinks we need to be on alert for excesses so that we can do our best to speak out against them. If we do not "speculate" about the possible consequences of the terrible trends we're witnessing right now, and merely sit back and say "ho hum, it isn't as bad as people claim," aren't we just facilitating more horror?

On one side the agenda is led by powerful people in powerful positions who have the power of the media on their side. On the other side, the agenda is led by another set of influential people who have but a small but powerful delivery. Both radical in their own right with-in their agendas. In all likelihood, those sides will never meet. The problem is those in the middle of them both. Pressured by both sides. Where is the point where they will decide to lean one way or the other? Where is the point where they say I have had enough and rebel? Rebellion can be in the direction of either agenda.
