Yikes! And yeah IQAir only monitored select major cities. It did get worse since I posted - over 200 all afternoon and still around 200 now the next morning, but not as bad as NY earlier this month (300+) or Hefei

It seem so many environmental issues relate to ever increasing populations with concomitant pollution and demand for ever increasing use and depletion of resources. Exploding populations leads to ageing population increases and related pressures on economies. Most governments are fixated on economic growth to keep pace with demand and see no advantage of addressing population growth. Cities just keep getting bigger and more crowded which create pressures that boil over into a kind of madness of violent demonstrations. France is now experiencing a sudden furious outburst of violence over the death of a teenager shot by police.

There seems little prospect of effectively dealing with so many of these related problems unless we get serious about population control but we are on the back of the tiger demanding every increasing growth and seem incapable of dealing with this conundrum of requiring more economic growth dependent upon population increase and demand which in turn exacerbates the problems.

Artificial intelligence indicates:
  • Japan: Japan has been experiencing a population decline for several decades, and yet it has also consistently ranked high in terms of quality of life. In 2022, Japan was ranked #1 in the world by the World Happiness Report. Some of the factors that contribute to Japan's high quality of life include a strong social safety net, a high level of education, and a clean environment.
  • Italy: Italy is another country that has experienced a population decline in recent years. However, it has also made progress in improving its quality of life. In 2021, Italy was ranked #28 in the world by the World Happiness Report. Some of the factors that contribute to Italy's improved quality of life include a strong focus on work-life balance, a rich cultural heritage, and a beautiful natural environment.
  • Germany: Germany is also a country that has seen its population decline in recent years. However, it has also made significant investments in education, healthcare, and infrastructure. As a result, Germany has consistently ranked high in terms of quality of life. In 2022, Germany was ranked #15 in the world by the World Happiness Report.

Maybe it is not all doom and gloom.

That's why it's dangerous to use AI without double checking it.

Japan's population has actually increased by 38% since 1961, although started to decline slightly over the last decade. It is expected that this decline will accelerate over the coming decades due to the very low birth rate.

So where is the danger to which you refer?

Fertility is below replacement rate faster than expected - the last continent with TFR above 2.1 is Africa and they're on a downward trajectory too

But yeah, the transition will be hard (esp for countries with pension systems built on expectations of population growth) and we need to stop chasing perpetual economic growth too, sooner or later

It hasn't experienced a population decline except in the last few years. The population was still increasing up until 2012. What it has experienced is a decline in birth rates, which will ultimately lead to a population decline if not improved.

The figures vary a bit from different sources but it seems there has been a slow, steady population decline now for the past 12 years.

This report is from The Japan Times : Japan's population shrank by 556,000 in 2022 from a year earlier to 124.9 million, marking the 12th straight year of decrease, government data showed Wednesday, as the number of Japanese nationals saw its largest drop on record.

That's why Japan invites young people to come and work in Japan .. lot's of opportunities for young Indonesians.

Correct but 12 years is not 'several decades'. Also Germany has not declined at all. So that's what it is important to check information generated by AI before relying on it.

While my initial reference used an AI post I have looked at many different posts. As I said earlier, the figures from web site to web site vary. The consensus seems to be that Japan's population has been in decline now for some years. I agree that AI is not without its flaws but interesting to see how it is shaping up.

As Winston Churchill said, "The only statistics you can trust are those you falsified yourself."

Wow ... 49 degrees Celsius in Italy. But maybe not caused by El Nino, but climate change.
