A middle path to sustainable Indonesian palm oil

A middle path to sustainable Indonesian palm oil

"It is essential to bridge the gap between large palm oil firms, environmental activists and the smallholder farmers caught in the middle"
Such a sad reality when Human's destroy the land and forest which is home to the animals, to be able to survive in a life of poverty. There is obviously too many people on this planet! When all of nature is gone, Mother nature will retaliate and put a stop to the plague of human existence! We cannot survive without water, air, sunshine, oxygen. There should be a plan developed to produce palm oil but leave enough forest also, but Humans are stupid and greedy and cannot see past their nose!

Mother nature has managed this planet since millions of years, astroids impacts, heat waves, ice age, you name it....
A few billions humans are not going to impress her !

Remember, the world is a dangerous place. Nobody ever survived it !

There are not too many people on this planet. The decadence, excessiveness, distribution of wealth and the need to show winnings to the shareholders, no matter the price or consequences, are the problems. Or at least some of the problems.

Here you go again getting far removed from the subject, which was the destruction of the forest for production of palm oil, to benefit a few humans while ignoring the Natural world of air, water, land, animals, etc. yes that's true that no one gets out alive, but that doesn't give humans the right to accelerate the destruction of all life on this planet!

Same was done to mine coal, copper, and now rare earth metals....

Have a look at tve picture of the Grasberg open pit mine .....

Palm oil is such a poor unhealthy oil, only used for fatty snacks and similar. It would be better if Indonesia took care of the health of its citizens instead. [same goes for tobacco]

In my opinion, there is no point to talk about the things that a person have very little to control, unrealistic expectation.

Top man: palm oil to replace diesel oil, fossil fuel.
Alternatively from Kompas but the subtitle is in Indonesian

The speech is in Indonesian but when you go directly to YT, you could turn on CC (closed caption) and change it to English and you will get subtitle in English.

There is another discussion of Palm Oil Industry in Indonesian and environmental destruction

The European Union has prohibited the import of Indonesian palm oil due to its association with environmental destruction, including the clearing of rainforests. This activity endangers habitats of endangered species like orangutans and Sumatran tigers. Historically, some forest fires have been ignited by the convenient practice of forest clearance by big companies.

Many Indonesian conglomerates are heavily invested in the palm oil industry. Indonesia possesses ample coal reserves, leading to speculation about palm oil potentially replacing fossil fuels, let alone saying that it will never be exhausted (?)

There are concerns that vested interests, including conglomerates, may be influencing scientific recommendations to keep exploiting palm oil plantation to protect their business interests.

Silence will always lead to nothing ever gets done to fix something. While you personally may think that a discussion here has no impact on anything beyond the personal interest of the forum members, your thinking would be wrong.

Even discussions here can grow. There are not just some foreigners on here venting a out what could or should be. There are local Indonesians here too. While there are some that actively post here, there are many others who visit as members or as guest. All visitors have the ability to take information learned here to others outside this forum. It can cause conversations which just maybe could reach someone in a position where the information becomes valuable.

Indonesia could do much to become more self sustainable in many agriculture and livestock products. They just don't know how. They know where they need to be to get there but don't seem to know the path to get there. Farmers want fast growing, little effort to maintain, and easily harvested to get to market and get paid. See where that went 40 to 50 years ago when the government told those with land to grow papaya. Fast, continued harvest, little care. Now they keep talking about self sustainability but out of the other side of their mouths they push exports. Could they have both? Sure, in limited items. Do they know how to get there and properly manage it? I don't think so.

I forget whether I got this from news feed or someone here has already shares this article.

Interesting reading.

I don't think anyone but Freeport has ever claimed that Grasberg is anything other than an ecological disaster. The same goes for deforestation and farming, and coal and other mining in sensitive environments or without operational safeguards and reclamation. We've lost a lot because of such activity. Earth will survive, yes, but increasingly large parts of it are ruined for many years to come.

Palm oil's in a whole lot more than snacks. It's cheap cooking oil, fuel, goes into soap, bread, cosmetics, etc.

And it also tends to have a bit of political clout. As I recall, when Mahathir was Malaysia's Prime Minister a law was passed making it a criminal offence to criticize the palm oil industry.
