JAKARTA, INDONESIA
A small plane with five people on board went missing Wednesday in Indonesia's easternmost province of Papua, officials said.

The PT Associated Mission Aviation plane went missing on a short flight from Wamena, the capital of the mountainous district of Jayawijaya, to Derakma in neighboring Nduga district, said Melkianus Kotta, head of the local search and rescue agency.

The plane was carrying two pilots — one Indonesian and one from the Netherlands — and three Indonesian passengers.

Is PT Associated Mission Aviation the same as MAF (Mission Aviation Fellowship)?

Had a friend who was with MAF and later Helivida. He would tell us stories about how tricky it was flying there. Shame this isn't a one off.

Yes, a too regular occurrence, especially for these little puddle jumper aircraft and helicopters, I don't really know how they can improve the safety of these flights

That being said they, like Seventh Day Adventists, do provide transport and communication. I've flown with SDA in the Solomons.

Oh that's a bit mean, but true I suppose, I think most of the native people would other than medical help be much better off left alone, civilization is no big deal

Flying in Papua has to be one of the most dangerous aviation enterprises still being done today. Young pilots, no Nav Aids, dangerous "airports", weird cargo and passengers, mountainous areas, fickle weather, small planes, you name it. People flying there have to be borderline insane. Incredible views though, and great adventures I'm sure. Worst Place to be a Pilot, a British documentary, chronicles some the story of some of these pilots.

A friend of mine used to fly helicopters in papua, he said he was about to land when a lot of black men came running out shooting arrows at him, he doesn't know what affended them but he didn't stop around to find out, and he changed his job
