4/11, 25/11 and 2/12 anti-Ahok demonstrations

They said the same about preaching from the mosque besides the azan but quite some are still doing it, esp. on Thursday nights. (I would not call 10 PM evening anymore.)

Not sure what to think about the rumor that FPI wants to become a political party and what to make of them categorically denying that. Good be good, could be bad.

I've seen graffiti here in Ciamis "bubarkan FPI" and anyone I've talked to expresses similar sentiment

It's Manado. There are no FPI in Manado.

You're right of course, but they are also not registered and thus officially recognized in Jakarta. Still they show their presence (cf. the former JakSel raids during Ramadan). Obviously you don't see them in most Barat/Utara areas.

The thing is that self regulating federations based on provinces simply won't work here. For Aceh, North Sulawesi, South Moluccas, etc. yes. But in the Jakarta DKI? (Or other big cities?) It is simply too diverse. How many of the (national 1.2%) Chinese live here? A lot. Unfortunetely there never will be a pro-Ahok demonstration.

Cool name btw, 'Wellem Sigar'.

[NB: that 1.2% census number has been proven many times to be BS, since people who are mixed, are not necessarily considered to have a Chinese ethnicity and many do not report themselves on the census as Chinese either]

it look like FPI got dropped by everyone and now play a saving-the-face by joining the 2 dec demo

I am sure there are a lot of things behind the scenes we don't know. Money through resources etc. going to generals and some people wanting the country to continue this way. It is also complicated by the fact that there are actual people who believe that non-Muslims should not be leaders and the belief in political Islam. They believe this enough to kill other Muslims and are willing blow themselves up. I imagine there are some generals who have the same belief. If they gain political strength I can not see this being good for the country long term.

25 November ended up not happening... Any news on the status of potential action on 2 December? I hope for a normal (demo-free) Friday, but it would be nice to know either way.

I get the feeling that there are a lot of deals behind the scene and that there will still be a non-eventful demo from the FPI knobheads so that they can save face.

The police has supposedly arrested some hardline ISIS operators who were gonna bomb a bunch of buildings and take over the DPR or some kind of bullshit like that. You know, the same hardcore terrorists that are using home made hand guns and firecracker bombs.

It was all ISIS all along! Or some foreign western actors! Or... Something like that. But definitely not some local powerful political actors, no no, not at all. So all is good! /s

It's a bit sad all this circus end up like this.
No one blamed
Everyone saving face

This mean it happen again anytime soon.

The country should not allow anyone to call for a murder publicly. They should be put on arrest immediately, whoever they are.

At least I hope it gave some bad reputation to FPI

Hey, this is only my armchair general, keyboard warrior, superficial analysis and not a reflection of reality. Let's see how the situation evolves.

:thumb: that was also my thought when I read about the arrest(s) last night. Quickly provide a scapegoat who, if not arrested by authorities, would have caused havoc!

Funny how the Myanmar/Burma gov't was mentioned as a potential target (of one of the arrested) only days after the demo for the 25th was seamlessly repackaged as an anti-Myanmar / pro-Rohingya statement.

Of course, this is not to say that the arrested individuals were not patsies who were always expendable.

Yeah, I know I know.
It's almost impossible they blame foreign for this, it would mean all Indonesian actor of the demo were under control of the foreign, this would include FPI and the crazy Iman calling for the murder of Ahok.
Almost... it's indonesian... you never know.

Thing for sure it look like a general saving face for everyone... until next time.

What I hope it's they (Jokowi) is waiting thing calm down for making major arrest. But I don't expect it to happen.

It's indonesia, everyone must save face, particularly the criminal.

I have a friend who is a teacher who said most of the students' families in her classes are going to Singapore at some point this week. Could be a case of prepare for the worst, but hope for the best.

I suppose a lot of us read the Jakarta Globe and such but here is the latest on the protest this coming Friday:

Organizers Agree to Limit Dec. 2 Rally to Monas Area: Police

The National Police announced that the organizers of this week's planned mass protest rally have agreed to restrict all actions to the National Monument complex, or Monas, in Central Jakarta to ensure that it proceeds in a peaceful and orderly manner.

The rally with theme "Bela Islam" ("Defend Islam") is organized by a group calling itself the National Movement to Guard the Fatwas of the Indonesian Ulema Council (GNPF-MUI).

Speaking at a press conference following a meeting with leaders of the GNPF-MUI and the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) in Jakarta on Monday (28/11), National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian said the protest will take place between 8.00 a.m. and 1.00 p.m. on Friday.
Protesters will not be allowed to occupy the streets in the area as it will disrupt residents' daily activities.

GNPF-MUI advisory board chairman Rizieq Shihab said the police and the protesters have agreed on several points for the Dec. 2 rally.

These are as follows:

  • The GNPF-MUI will hold a peaceful rally with protestors unfolding prayer mats and praying for the arrest of Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama, who was named a suspect in a blasphemy case.
  • Protesters will perform Islamic devotional chants, known as dzikir, with the theme "Prayer for the Nation's Salvation." Security personnel are encouraged to join protesters in prayer.
  • The GNPF-MUI will order all its members to disperse peacefully and return home after the prayer.
  • A team will be established to manage technical matters, such as indicating the kiblat direction, providing security at the gates, setting up medical posts and temporary toilets, and safeguarding arriving protesters on Jalan M.H. Thamrin, Jalan Jend. Sudirman and at the Arjuna Wijaya horse statue.
  • The GNPF-MUI will not take responsibility for any actions that are not in accordance with the agreed arrangements.
  • The police in the various provinces or districts will not prevent people from traveling to Jakarta to attend the rally.

In all seriousness, would it be possible/advisable to catch a train from Gambir early Friday afternoon for 2 white male expats who's best Indonesian would roughly be "satu bintang lagi"?

I wouldn't recommend it simply due to the fact that it will most likely be packed full of people who came for the protest and will be going back to wherever they come from.
