4/11, 25/11 and 2/12 anti-Ahok demonstrations

I got an email from our embassy yesterday - a security alert. They normally dont do spamming, so I presume they take the upcoming demonstration seriously.

The NU is now saying 50 Indonesia ISIS fighters from Syria have come back to Indonesia and may cause violence at the rally. I see this as a pre announcement of blaming someone besides the local groups for any problems. For some reason they just can't/won't place blame on the local radicals like the FPI. Plus, how come the organizations like the NU know how many fighters have just returned and the police who are supposed to be on top of it don't seem to know anything?

Well, we left the zoo / arena. Hopefully it will be a storm in a teacup.

As I said on a comment on the Jakarta post, those protesting have forgotten Jesus(who Islam regards as a prophet) taught on forgiveness and loving your neighbor.

I heard the demonstrators are being paid 500k a day for 3 days, plus makan and transport , indonesia what a place !

& most of the poor bastards probably don't even know they're demonstrating or if they do they don't know why, just along for the ride

I think more like Rp50,000 per day. Transportation and meals included.

.
They expect more than 500.000 people. From Makassar, Lampung, Jogja, Madura, etc. They are all part if the DKI of course and want to be sure their governor will listen to them.

Just heard already 200 busses entered the city. I wonder though; there must be some regulation on this as in Europe where they can stop them and send them back?

They have stopped them before and searched the buses but have not sent them back as far as I understand. They are attending a legal demonstration so nothing can be done about their attendance.

Read a very interesting article by Sidney Jones the other day.
She makes some very valid points especially given her own treatment in Indonesia for speaking out against radicals.

Have a read its well worth it.

https://www.lowyinstitute.org/the-interpreter/why-indonesian-extremists-are-gaining-ground

Indonesia’s spineless political leaders have allowed extremists to seize the momentum and foment religious hatred against the governor – who happens to be an ethnic Chinese Christian – for more than a month without challenging the substance or methods of their arguments. Now this hatred is culminating in a march on Jakarta on Friday 4 November that even has jihadists in Syria actively urging violence. Jakarta is on highest alert, and armoured personnel carriers are stationed near the presidential palace.

But it is precisely those same elements that the government has repeatedly failed to confront. This is why extremism and intolerance are growing in Indonesia: because no one dares draw a line and recognise religiously-inspired incitement for what it is, let alone condemn it or take measures to stop it.

Saw this and was reminded instantly of "what's got 8 legs 2 pricks and loves apples ??"

Watched Mata Najwa just now....so about 21 witnesses is under interrogation/investigation by the police/Kapolri...anybody wanna take a guess what will happen if Ahok is found:

1. Not guilty of insulting the islam.
2. Guilty?

I know I am a little ignorant on the subject, but how is reciting the Koran insulting Islam?

It is not. In an nutshell: Ahok was basically saying (during his visit to the Kepulauan Seribu) don't be fooled by some people who use Surat Al Maedah 51, something about not choosing somebody of a different religion to be your leader.

It was blown out of proportion and one or two words were twisted...and here we are today.
