4/11, 25/11 and 2/12 anti-Ahok demonstrations

Good morning everyone.

I will be following the events today and will report any useful information in this thread.

The masses are still arriving a Monas, quite a good number already.

It's supposed to go on until after the Friday prayers and I don't think anything will happen before then.

Let's see what happens when it's time to disperse.

In the mean time, it appears KSPI is already out despite negotiations with police to move the protest to another day.

I imagine El_G sitting on his balcony (if he has one) military binoculars slung around his neck surrounded by an assortment of radios, laptop, wearing a peaked cap with cigarette holder gripped between his teeth a la Hunter S Thompson. I doubt there is a bottle of Jack Daniels and a bag of cocaine.

I wish I looked this cool :)

So this is interesting.

There are actually 3 groups supposed to protest today:

GNPF-MUI doing their mass prayer at Monas.

KSPI (Workers Unions) demanding increased minimum wage.

And Gerakan Selamatkan NKRI who are asking for a change of the 1945 constitution (or a return to its original version more exactly) and for Jokowi and Jusuf Kalla to step down. Apparently, the 8 figures arrested for treason are part of this group. They were planning to protest at the Parliament today. Is this the group suspected of taking over the parliament building?

This last action was supposed to take place this afternoon after the mass prayers. Let's see what happens now that they have been arrested.

A message circulating among journalists suggests that a number of activists, including musician-cum-politician Ahmad Dhani, retired two-star Army general Kivlan Zein, former lawmaker Sri Bintang Pamungkas and Rachmawati Soekarnoputri, sister of former president and ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri, have been arrested on treason charges.

Some additional name according to Republika: Rizal Ramli, Aditya Warman, and Rizal Kobar

These are definitely some grade A shit stirrers, although obviously not the real power behind the mass demonstrations.

Excellent!

Tomorrow it might...:rain:.

Due to the power of evil thought my prediction happened...hopefully it will dampen the spirit of those who also have evil thoughts but will probably make the use of water-cannons moot

I can see him embedded within the protesters and decked out with his favorite sarung, peci and sendal jepit while sipping fine chilled teh botol.

He probably wants to get in real close and knows the only safe way is to be one of the ones handing out the Nasi Buncit.

So it's raining now... Hopefully it will cool down spirits...

I was on a flight from Bangka yesterday evening, I would guesstimate that 30% of the plane was filled with passengers wearing very obvious muslim clothes (for lack of a better description, I mean men wearing the long white robes en head coverings), who were talking very excitedly about going to Monas today.

There was a point I was going to make with this, but I got distracted and came back a few hours after typing this and now I forgot the point. I guess I tried to say that it really proves the point that people are actually flying in for just this, and makes me wonder who really pays for it all.

So the prayer is over... President Jokowi did his speech after joining for the Friday prayer.

It's almost 1pm, time to disperse.

Well what a surprise, 6 mosques and no call to prayers this lunch time, I went past a mosque it's all locked up, really weird

So it looks like the masses are moving to the Hotel Indonesia roundabout. You can see on TV that they are not moving and have trucks with people speaking on megaphones and masses waving flags. Looks like a demonstration to me.

I was under the impression that the police would not tolerate that?

There was a ton of people a Monas and surrounds:

And then they moved towards/through Hotel Indonesia roundabout with Thamrin completely overtaken:

But apparently, the Hotel Indonesia roundabout is already cleared now.

So, looks like it's over. Everybody's gone home.

Hopefully, this is the end of it.

After all the anticipation it feels a bit like an anti-climax doesn't it? :bounce:
