Brazil goes home...

.
As of last night we have an all European World Championship.

Now this is not a joke: A (female) friend of ours, someone who has no idea about football, made this 'prediction' a couple of days ago on a piece of paper. Not perfect, but she could still be right?! Everybody laughed her off.

Tomorrow I will post a poll / friendly wager...
.

Since in Thailand the football players trapped in the cave were found by an Englishman, the whole country is now cheering for England.

Well, the Thai will be happy since England beat Sweden, but it was a very uninspiring game. It seems England can only score in 'still phases', so from corners, penalties, free kicks etc. No open play but set piece goals. On the other hand, it seems their coach really foresaw the trend and effects of the ("don't mention the) VAR!" and even studied the NBA and American Football to optimize the team and create space during these phases. Also, they were lucky their goalie really was exceptional tonight.

Pickford not too small after all...

The Russian fairytale is over. Croatia made it after penalties. Fernandes, who doesn't speak any Russian and who is not very popular in Brazil, scored in extended time but failed at the penalties, from hero to zero.

Still England are underwhelming, I mean seriously beating Tunisa, Panama, lose to Belgium, draw with Colombia and beat an underperforming Sweden? Ok maybe IF they beat Croatia, France / Belgium you can't deny the fact that they won it etc but that final game will be the only real true test they had
A bit like the season Leicester won the league, a freak season
Even my team Arsenal were runners up (a fact even more spectacular because the Spuds chucked it all away on the last day, only Spurs could come 3rd in a 2 horse race, I think they lost 5-0 and we won 6-1 to reverse the GD?)

Anyway to be the best you must beat the best, yeh yeh on paper they won the World cup, but it would hardly be a convincing win. Like said above, seems most of the goals are either pens or tap-ins or a couple of headers.
HK has golden boot with 6 but 4 were pens and one was a deflection and the other one he was on the goal line anyway?

Such a weird cup this time. Sorry that Russia didn't at least get to the semi to keep the party going.

Losing on pens sucks when it's because the player misses the goal completely. Different if you lose because of a good save.

The real final is France v Belgium imho

France versus Belgium, I suppose .... but the name should be changed to the Cross-Town Rivals Cup.

Not a great game to watch. But France clearly has a superior system, everything fits together much better, a solid team. It's a pity to have the players with the best individual class in history (even better than 1986) but not being able to translate that on the field. Perhaps Belgium has a chance in the next European Championship.

Now the Belgians should not complain about 'anti football'; they played the same against Brasil after they took the lead.

I think young football players know at 6 year old, there should be someone defending at the first pole of the goal when a corner is taken. Where did Fellaini go?

Besides the fact that England and Croatia will play each other in less then an hour, these are the nice-to-knows:
Some countries (as England) got fined by the FIFA since the plagers wore the wrong socks. Sponsorship and standardization are important. These fines are quite high, tens of thousands of €.
Christiano Ronaldo moving to Juventus (for €105-112 million, a bargain) has resulted in strikes at a Fiat factory. The company of the president of Juve, is majority shareholder of FCA, there's the link.

it's because fiat offered to pay his wages and fiat staff didn't get pay rise for years

Croatia in the finals...

Quite a shock for the English. But now we can see there was no real 'weak' half and easy route in this tournament.

Personally I'm looking forward to the game for the 3rd place on Saturday between Belgium and England. Explicably but not customary, they will probably give everything to win.

Amazing job for the Croats to get to the final. A country of around 5 million people, but a giant in football.

In the 1998 Cup, they lost to France in the semi-finals (France eventually winning the Cup), and made 3rd place. Let's see if they can avenge that loss this time.

I am rooting for the underdogs in the final, apologies to French friends in the forum! :first:

final will be good but france should squeeze it 2-1 or 3-1 and belgium for 3rd place 2-0

Quite some talented players from that area. See for instance the Swiss team (with the big controversy about their players from Albania/Kosovo lately, they made symbolic political gestures).

Of course Yugoslavia always had a rather good team, pre war and before the split-up. The Serbs aren't that bad at football either.

Most eastern europeans are pretty gritty and hardcore and tougher than the weak pretty boy brits who like to do hairspray commercials instead
same as the african players have more stamina and fitness - always the caucasian players who get cramp etc or get chubby like rooney or old ronaldo or diego etc

never seen a black ex player pile on the pounds

Well, Nadé (ex Sheffield) and Bogarde (ex Ajax).

Lineker looks better now than when he was young. You see him all the time as expert analyst.
