England won the toss and elected to bowl, Cook went cheaply, but any hopes the Aussies had of a skittling evaporated in the steamy Brisbane weather as Vince and Stoneman produced England's first 2nd wicket century partnership in a long time.

Third session started producing some more action as the ball started reverse seaming slightly and Aussies wrestled back control of the match and produced a couple more much needed wickets.

End of day 1. Slightly effected by some rain.

Aussies slightly in control.

4/196 at stumps.

or you can read an official review here, including the phrase "hubristic baloney."

Well, that will be last action of the day. The umpires have decided it's got too dark. Steven Smith isn't impressed. He appeared to be told three balls ago it was okay for the new ball. So, that's it for the opening day of the Ashes. Who takes the honours? Mighty close to call. Not sure you can say. Mark Stoneman and James Vince did superbly before Australia struck back with three wickets - including the run out of Vince for 83 - but Dawid Malan and Moeen Ali did very well to see out the final hour. The pick of the bowlers was Nathan Lyon, some beautiful off spin, while Pat Cummins' pace picked up two important scalps. Andrew Miller is bashing out his match report which will be ready short, and we already have our first piece for you to digest as George Dobell assesses the importance of that second-wicket stand. It includes the phrase "hubristic baloney."

A lot of pundits didn't agree with Australian wicket keeper Tim Paine being recalled into the side, and the hatchets came out after he dropped a sitter which should have seen Vince on his way back to the shed early.

I have been listening on the radio. Does anyone have any recommendations to get TV coverage. Most of the live streaming sites are not real good coverage or are full of adds.

Assuming you have a PC, not a Mac, you need to download acestream - http://acestream.org

There's a load of us keeping this stream link up to date - 3cf32325ca45e0179e0b1a3e3ad8d2de5296edcd

bloody heck, I go to a meeting and all hell breaks loose.

Eng 302
Aussies 2/38

Dumped Australian test player Glen Maxwell sits on 213 not out in the Sheffield Shield which should do his efforts to regain a spot in the team no harm.

4/165 with Smith 64 and Marsh 44 steadying the ship.

I really hope Marsh makes a score to shut the doubters like me up.

In another life I would spend the first two days of the GABBA test in a box with ex test players. Those were the days!

6/202 and only the tail to come. The selectors experiment has not worked with the now too familiar top and middle order failures. They get starts but just cant go on with it.

We''l take the cane out of the cupboard and give them a damn good thrashing.

As much as I would love to agree... i suspect this will be a close series. Which is good for cricket.

Brisbane is usually ours. However, this one is so evenly balanced given that we will likely bat on day five. I must say the last hour today was great test cricket.

Hopefully it will become a series that we all are on the edge of our seat in the 5th test. That I love.
