Suggestions for Expat Indo Forum

Little hitch with the smileys & icons... I can only get a few basics up.

Can we have more- or doesn't anyone want them?

Haha, I knew you'd eventually call us out on this one. The default vbulletin comes with the ones we have now...have to add the rest manually! It's on our to do list.

We will also name the one boinking a computer the :Bad_azz: (assuming we can find the damn things...)

;)

Hahahaha make me giggle.

I got an email from a certain Frenchmen in Manado - saying that there was an unmoderated section being planned - so please tell me where can I swear ??

We are working out the details, like how much moderation (if any!) will be done, or whether you can challenge Mods in the cage! But that is a bit further down the road. For now we want to make sure everyone feels welcome, discussion and community is growing, and our membership increasing.

Can we add one of a red airplane?

Here's another suggestion related to the fact that members have already chipped in and started producing content to beef up the usefulness of the forum for new expats/visitors. (BA in particular.) We have threads on living in Bandung, quality of JIS, useful Indonesian phrases, and more.

At the moment these things are easily found but as time goes by and we have more and more newer threads, they won't be. So here is a proposal: put a sticky in each section, if appropriate, and in that sticky keep an updated list of info threads. For example, a year from now a sticky in the Housing Search section might look like this:

hypothetical sticky in the "housing search" section said:

Member Advice on Housing Search:

  • Apartment living in Jakarta (link to thread)
  • Gotchas to avoid when choosing a house to rent (link to thread)
  • Rent payments in Indonesia: how they usually work (link to thread)
  • Rumah 123: how to use it if you don't speak Indonesian (link to thread)
In this way, we can take advantage of our member's generous sharing of their knowledge while avoiding the problem of "buried" info that is hard to find, and newbies can browse the list and click on whatever is relevant to them.

#RandomThought: It almost feels like we are participants in a website coup d'etat, or coup de forum, as it were.

That said, hopefully as traffic on this site steadily increases (and traffic on LIIEF declines), the pagerank algorithm will notice, and maybe feature our new home prominently in searches related to "Indonesia Expat". Maybe there is some sort of SEO process to kickoff the process, but I fear that SEO tends to be rather expensive.

As mentioned by B_A (I think it was) earlier in this thread, cutting the automatic quoting / requoting (or multiquoting) in PM responses would be sweet, if possible. I usually just highlight and delete all or part of the quoting, as suits my purpose, but it would be optimal to have quoting the recipient's previous message as an option, not an automatic response.

Also, couldja insert a subforum under "Education" for teachers and related info / questions, similar to the "teachers chat" on the erstwhile forum. please?

I suppose we can also just send people over here from LIIEF. When someone asks for help with their problem... I don't know anyone on either forum who is more likely to be of service than Atlantis. When someone wants to put their dog up... BA would be great, if they are in the area. Since those sources, and many others, have come here, it seems appropriate to point the LIIEF user to the correct forum... am I going to get deleted and or banned from there?

Lol....why don't you give it a try and report back! ;)

No seriously, you will probably get both. Atlantis' post giving his e-mail address has already been taken down, even though it didn't mention this forum at all. I suppose there is always PM. :D

Well, in theory, it isn't against the posting guidelines of LIIF.

If, one of us mods, were to advertise it more than once a month, then yes, it would be deleted.

But if other users would like to recommend this place, there shouldn't be any reason not to. If tomorrow the imigrasi website started posting accurate information in English, would it be fair to get any post mentioning it deleted?

I see you already have, lets see how long until someone notices :)

I just posted the link to here on my FB along with a blurb about how people are leaving one and coming to this one. I only have a couple of expats on my FB but others probably have many more.

One idea from back in my Peoplesoft consulting days: perhaps it would be wise to have a clear separation between the roles of Administrator and Moderator. This can be a bitter pill for an administrator to lose moderating privileges, but it each of the roles has enough duties on its own, rather than one person (or more) holding both roles simultaneously. This also serves as a precaution against abuse of power. This is a general principle rather than a reference to any specific person.

We can do that, or we can even have a per area sub forum! The one negative about sticky-ing it that I can think of is that if there ends up being lots of areas reviewed by members, there will be tons of stickies, and the non-sticky threads will be buried down below or even on the next page.

Yes! I totally agree with this. Some of the super long post threads over there were confusing as hell. We could go with updating the very first post in a thread with the most up to date information maybe? Something like a "All Information in this post is correct as of MM DD YY"...

I think the management of the Laws, Visas etc area is a priority. There is a lot of repetition and it is difficult to wade through to get up to date info. Btw, much better on this site, easier to navigate. Is Marcus coming over here?

May I request an IT help section please
