Mobil Rakyat...new cars

For those who still feel like being twenty. Who would love to drive a hot hatch. And who are lucky enough to have much more dough to spend than when they were studying:

Translated Honda press release:

PT Honda Prospect Motor (HPM) officially launched the latest generation of All New Honda Civic Type R sports cars on March 30, 2023 in Jakarta. With an increasingly aerodynamic aggressive design and the engine with the greatest power, the All New Honda Civic Type R becomes the fastest Civic model Honda has ever made.

The Type R variant is a type of Honda car that is designed with inspiration from a racing car. This variant was first introduced for the Honda NSX in 1992 as a Honda sports car that focuses on speed and pleasure in the extraordinary driving of a race car. After that, the Type R variant has also been present for models such as Honda Integra and Honda Accord. Honda Civic itself first had a Type R variant in 1997, and at this time it has entered its 6th generation.

Unlike other Honda variants, each Type variant has a red Honda logo emblem that was previously only used in Honda racing cars that went down in a racing championship. Not only that, to further emphasize its character as a sports car, the Type R variant also has an exclusive color, namely Championship White which is inherited from the F1 Honda racing car.

The latest generation of the All New Honda Civic Type R was first launched in Japan in September 2022 and was immediately greeted with enthusiasm by fans around the world. In 2022, the All New Honda Civic Type R won prestigious awards, namely Car of the Year Japan, Best Car to Buy from Motor Authority, Top Gear Magazine as Hot Hatch of the Year, and the highest award as Car of The Year.

The All New Honda Civic Type R carries a 2.0 Liter VTEC Turbo engine that produces a maximum power of 319 PS, an increase of 9 PS compared to the previous generation, and a maximum torque of 420 Nm, an increase of 20 Nm compared to the previous generation. With the most powerful engine power, the All New Honda Civic Type R managed to break the record as the fastest front-wheel drive car at the Suzuka circuit, Japan by recording a Lap Time of 2 minutes 23,120 seconds. This record beats the previous record also held by the Honda Civic Type R.

Not only in terms of performance, the All New Civic Type R is also now equipped with various new technologies that are increasingly sophisticated, including the LogR feature as a driving guide that can be personally adjusted and functions to accurately record and analyze driver time records. The driving experience with the All New Civic Type R is also more personal with a new feature, namely Individual Mode, which can adjust engine performance according to the character of the driver. In addition, for the first time Honda SENSING safety features are also available on the Civic Type R.

It may well be that followers of this thread are aware that driverless taxis are now on the streets of Sanfrancisco. Below is a link about co-existing with driverless cars. Hard to see driverless cars coping with traffic in Indonesia. You could be stuck at an intersection here all day while waiting for an acceptable break in the traffic for your driverless car to proceed.

Perhaps they will build in “senseless suicidal mode” as a setting?

Hard to see driverless cars coping with traffic in Indonesia.

A mate was regaling me with stories of his friend in Dubai who has an Audi, I think he said, which has auto braking/cruise control to maintain the distance from the car in front. The friend keep going backwards in traffic and eventually turned it off.

A European car magazine did a test with keeping a constant distance with the car in front during rush hour on a highway. So when an aggressive zigzagging BMW/Audi driver filled the gap from the left or someone merged onto the highway, the test car lowered its speed till they got to the same distance with that new one again.

That way they completely avoided having to hit the brakes of course. It was somewhat surprising that with this way of driving, they did not really take longer to complete the total trip, it’s like a minute more in half an hour. (But they did use less gasoline.) Of course it feels very unnatural and we all want to get as close as possible to the car in front of us during macet.

Forget white and black. Anyone who wants to be hip and trendy on four wheels chooses stone grey. Well, that’s what the (mainly German) car manufacturers think.

It’s the new trend color for cars, which looks a lot like freshly poured cement or the skin of a mouse. Now car manufacturers give it naturally a much more creative and poetic (read: commercial) name. From 'Crayon' with Porsche to 'Brooklyn Grau' at BMW.

I don’t see it happening here, It will be white, black and then silver for quite some time to come.

And we will have a completely new player in Indonesia’s automobile world.

No, it’s not some obscure Chinese brand but…..

…… Citroën!

Stellantis already started with an introduction in India, besides the growth markets in South America, and it seems Indonesia is next. Introduction in 2024, operated in partnership with the Indomobil Group as sole distributor.

Now Citroën is revealing the All-New C3 Aircross, a family SUV that is (according to their own words) tough outside and caring inside, and intelligently created with regional input to meet the specific needs of customers in key markets of India, South-East Asia and South America.

But obviously Citroën did exist here before…

And not that long ago. They left in ‘94.

December last year, I rented and drove the C3 Aircross 2021 for almost 3000km from istanbul, safronbolu, Ankara, Cappadocia, konya, antalya, pamukkale, bursa and Istanbul. Not very happy, very small car - though not biggie as only two of us; handling is just okay, not much power, a bit struggling on steep road at Cappadocia, not comfy on the motorways. Average fuel consumption 16km/l. For the same small car, I prefer the peugeot 208.

Of course Stellantis (as VW) uses the same platforms over different brands.

But they do have some kind of hierarchy in place for the ‘premiumness’ and pricing. (As in the VW example: Skoda -> Seat -> Volkswagen -> Cupra -> Audi -> Porsche)

Within the Stellantis brands Citroën is put at the lowest level (with Fiat but that is besides Italy sold more in South America nowadays), Peugeot is positioned considerably higher. DS is as premium brand the top of the bill.

So that explains a bit the move to (re)introduce Citroën in the developing markets. It also means you won’t get the quality of an American or European/Japanese Toyota but the local model.

I had never looked at a Chinese cars before. I admit, i bought a car not entirely with very logical reason.
But this time I'd like to be more realistic, looking for a greener car, good performance and a reasonable price.
Since I will live in Bali far from the main tourist are in off-grid solar panels hut then PHEV will makes more sense.
Initially, I looked for Outlander but the third row is very uncomfortable. This could be a good candidate - 95km with battery is not bad - better than the outlander and other PHEV.

I think we could expect hybrid versions of the Fortuner and Pajero Sport, perhaps already this year.

If you see a case of road rage, there’s often a (black!) Fortuner involved yes.

And the 10+ year old models also attract a certain type of people.

But the cars are not bad.

Akio Toyoda -former CEO and President of Toyota and now Chairman of the Board- apologizes on behalf of Toyota for "misconduct" by Daihatsu. Daihatsu, which is a subsidiary of Toyota, has messed around with safety testing. Which has far-reaching consequences.

In several models, Daihatsu made adjustments to test cars during crash tests so they scored better in safety tests. In the Toyota Yaris Ativ, Perodua Axia and Toyota Agya (all models developed by Daihatsu) they modified the inside of the driver's front doors during crash tests to improve the side impact test results.
Daihatsu itself also apologizes "for violating the trust that customers and other stakeholders have in us and for causing great inconvenience,".

Toyota says it is launching an extensive investigation into the consequences and which other models are involved. As a wholly owned subsidiary of Toyota, Daihatsu develops various models itself and is also responsible for the full certification of its models.

As we know, various models are not only known as Daihatsu, but also as Toyota. The aforementioned Toyota Yaris Ativ, for example, was developed by Daihatsu and uses the same technology as, for example, the Daihatsu Rocky. The Perodua Axia and the Toyota Agya mentioned are actually slightly modified versions of the Daihatsu Ayla.

Toyota may fear that more shared models have been victim to tampering. Which use Daihatsu's DNGA platforms, and there are quite a few. Daihatsu already says that there may still be cars in development where certification has not been done properly. There are definitely cars produced in Thailand and Malaysia involved, Indonesia’s Agya is not certain.

How is your new Veloz ? Any negative issues so far?
No, everything is great with the Veloz, so far. They even came out at one month with a mechanic to check everything, as part of the included Toyota Care.

Selling our Nissan was a bit more of a headache. My wife advertised on an online site, and got lots of used car dealers trying to lowball us. Some seemed to be working as a group, as they’d know specific info about the vehicle, when they hadn’t even seen it yet.

Finally a family came by, we knocked a few juta off, and they seemed happy with it.

Bagus! We're looking seriously at a Veloz also, so it's good to know.
