Health center in an island is mainly for its residents but when an island is a tourism destination, the health center wil also serve the tourists / travelers.

What should be the standard requirement for a health center located in a tourism destination, specially in island in terms of medical equipments and staff, eg emergency assistance and medical evacuation ? also who should operate this ealth clinics, the private sector or government ? this will relate to the medical cost for both residents and tourists.

The reason i am asking this, is because i am planning to assist a health center in an island which has been a fav destination for tourists in the last past few years.

So far they have asked for exygen tanks, equipments and tools for maternity, and many more.

Your inputs and suggestions will be much appreciated.

Thank you

The license for a primary clinic is issued on a very low administrative level (kecamatan), so fulfilling the requirements will be probably easy. Private companies can open clinics as well.

Is it not mandatory for any practitioner to be an Indonesian citizen? It used to be. Unknown if anything changed with that. I take it that since the OP has put this inquirery in a forum about Indonesia that they are in fact asking about an Indonesian Island.

I thought they just asking what equipment a clinic needs? Hence the oxygen tanks etc

Moyo Island in Sumbawa.
We asked them earlier and they gave us the list of what they need.
The reason I am asking for the standard requirement is because there are some cases where tourists got injured (both minor and the wound that needs sttiches) after hiking or trekking and in my opinion as well that they need more than those equipments because it is not just a health clinic but it also serves as an emergency unit like ER) , it takes 1-2 hours trip by boat from the island to the main island.
What happens if someone has a heart attack ?

Every district (kecamatan) has a government medical clinic (Puskesmas). In urban areas, these are fairly well stocked and are able to handle routine procedures (first aid, minor surgeries, birth, basic dental work, basic lab work, etc.). In rural/remote areas, they may have very little beyond an exam table and an overworked GP.

As far as a helping clinic with equipment, it depends largely on what the clinic needs. I'm not sure if your question is meant to see if there is more than you can help with, or whether the request they made was reasonable? :D

For reference, here is a list of all the things that a Puskesmas needs via Health Ministry regulation. Note that on the website below each individual Puskesmas station has another link going to a list of equipment for each room.

Thank you for the helpful link.
My concern is that health clinic in any tourism destination should be more than just Puskemas, Moyo is just for a starter.

I have been to the puskesmas in Moyo and my visit (after what I saw) was the main reason for my concern above.

Defribulator

Dafluff,
Just how does one navigate to individual puskesmas's?
Thanks.

Not individual puskesmas's, but to the list of equipment that each puskesmas room needs, such as the emergency room, the delivery room, etc. Just click on the link after each paragraph.

I might be misunderstanding, so apologies if that's the case, but I assumed that voluntourism would be tourists from wealthy countries helping relatively impoverished local communities as part of their trip. But it seems you're more focused on donating to help tourists who find themselves outside their comfort zone.

Could you tell us a bit more about your priorites?

First of all I am an indonesian citizen.

Secondly, voluntourism in my opinion is the combination of volunteering and tourism, by having said that and coming from my background as a tour guide who often witness many tourism destinations in indonesia which have great potential but are not developed well, therefore i want to make a trip that can enrich the value and quality of a holiday trip of travelers by sharing knowledge and experience such as culinary/gastronomy, photography and videography, foreign language, communication ethics etc.

The idea is that the travelers (all indonesian) pays the normal trip to the destination but they stay at the residents house, all the trip fee goes to the resident who provides all the travelers' needs. This is to ensure that community-based tourism is established on the tourist destination, so the local residents can be a major player on developing their own backyard. And while they have a holiday there, they can provide those trainings above to the residents voluntarily.
Third, I have seen many tourism destinations do not have adequate medical equipments specially in islands where the distance from the main island is far, also there are rarely doctors standby during the day, only nurses, therefore i asked the forum about the standard requirements for a health clinic from foreigners' point of views for my reference purpose only without having no other intentions, because there are also foreign travelers come to moyo.
I also want to rise awarness to travellers (indonesian) that injuries and medical emergency can happen anytime, so they must reserach about health clinic in the destination prior to their holiday.

Hope this helps and apologize for the confusion I've created.

No problem, and thank you for clarifying.

In my view, tourists/foreigners that go to remote areas do so with the understanding that there will be a lack of facilities, including medical ones. Because of that, I also do not think that there needs to be a specific effort to have a fully equipped medical facility in a remote area just to cater to the rare tourist that may have a need for it. More so for the fact that you would need to divert resources, including trained medical personnel, from other areas to staff it.

let me rephrase
expensive to educate people to use such technology as a defribulator in a country village

You should websearch the term voluntourism. The term has an already accepted definition in English that is different of what your usage is. Since you are using this as a brand with a website of the same name, you may want to reconsider as this will lead to confusion in your brand. As you can tell, many people were already confused by your username.

This has already been done. It is called airbnb. The hosts that own the property make all the money, except the fee for the platform. Many of the higher rated/charging hosts include local knowledge, tours, and/or local food. They have the option of packaging these services together as part of the stay or selling them separately on the same site.

Maybe you might want to reach out to that site to join their host/ambassador program.

Yeah but airbnb probably don't have anything in the areas the OP is talking about. He stated remote and that points towards kampung living. Pull up a mat and find a corner to sleep in type. The major medical need for a tourist would probably point towards insect and vermin bites. Remote areas don't need or would have any clue what it would be for. They have their own methods and concoctions to deal with these things. The best thing in these areas for modern medical treatment would first be a fast vehicle to reach it.

Thank you @jukung11

I did and I have.

Airbnb takes commission from the hosts, I don't. The guests pay direcrly to the hosts for the services

What is it for me ? well I am just a frequent traveler who become a concerned traveler about tourism destination and its people.

I will make money somewhere else and run a mainstrean holiday trips.

Tourism destination should be more than sandy beaches and other beaitiful nature but also a place to exchange knowledge and experience between tourists and local people.

Most tourists come to tourism destinations just for holiday, they get off of the boat, go to the beach and may have passed through a village but do not stop by and have a small chat with loca people.

A small exmple, Do we spare our time to see local people when we are in Gilis either Gili T, M or A ?

If the definition of voluntourism divides 50-50 between volunteering and tourism, mine is 60 for tourism (destination) - while 40 for volunteering or even 70-30.

You do not have to be rich or come from wealthy countries to assist or contribute to commnities, also tourism is a universal thing and tourism destination is a place where all tourists from around the world meet, we dont care about yoir attributes.
