DON'T PANIC.... well, maybe a little bit.

I actually think that for Indonesia the better strategy is just to let the virus take its course and those who want to self isolate can do so. It may or may not turn out to be as bad in this climate as in Europe. People here don't really expect to live into their 80s and are fatalistic about death. Dengue is as bad, probably worse, so is malaria, and there are other tropical viruses here too (I had one once which almost blinded me). Life goes on, for most.

The strategy of shutting down the entire economy indefinitely, when 90% of people have no savings or money, will lead to civil disturbance on a scale never seen before, and it will happen within weeks. I don't blame Jokowi for not wanting to go down that path.

One day or one week it is a 8% death rate. That is a lot.
Well, that is if you believe the numbers of carriers the government declares. I don't. At all.

But to me, the thing which worries me the most is not the virus in itself as I said earlier. It's the possible economic consequences and what it will breed that I am concerned about.

Not going into lockdown doesn't mean though you should allow gatherings like these....

Amazing.

A similar situation for a Catholic Archbishop inauguration in East Nusa Tenggara. :(

Wait, so I debate your points, only talk about the facts and use working examples as to why you are incorrect and your only response is 'watch out newbie'. Lmao get real dude, when someone spouts nonsense they deserve to be told it.

You are literally basing a negative opinion of short term visa holders on a handful of your irresponsible friends over the course of a few years and failing to understand the basics of how economies and industries work in the meantime. Free your mind a little bit and stop being a child :)

Out of all due respect, you do come across as very hostile. I'm not really sure what 'facts' come from your anecdotal examples either. Please feel free to cite sources as evidence to support these anecdotes, but there is no need to wax lyrical about the self-evident nature of your posts. I'm a pretty infrequent poster here, but when I have posted, lots of the long-term users have been really helpful. An attitude adjustment might help you to tap into that. These are hard times and people are panicking, all the more reason to be nice.

This is not good, mass gatherings during this time, and for 4 days (19-22 March). More than 8,000 delegates from 48 countries. https://www.cnnindonesia.com/nasion...-8000-peserta-ijtima-dunia-sudah-tiba-di-gowa

The Bupati of Gowa is saying that the event is cancelled, but the reality is, the delegates are already on the ground at site. How to stop them? Perhaps more important is how are they going to get back to their countries if flights to many countries are cancelled? Maybe through Thailand again? Expect to see a case explosion similar to that church in South Korea soon.

Thanks for sharing. The following quote is also worrying: "By Wednesday, Indonesia’s tally of infections stood at 227, with 19 deaths. The nation of 260 million had run just 1,255 tests by Tuesday. By contrast, South Korea, with a population of a fifth that size, is doing more than 15,000 tests a day."

Is that true? Only 1,255 tests? More than 250 positive so far...

They have tested 1592 people (probably multiple tests per person).
Stats are released on the ministry of health page:

Seriously?!?!?! I had a feeling that we were not adequately testing, but only 1255 tests so far?!?!?!?! I am at a loss for words. If other countries notice this, we will not even need to close our borders because there will not be any borders open to us to begin with.

Some preliminary clinical research in France seems to have duplicated the results re: Hydroxychloroquine previously mentioned in this thread.

The research goes on further by adding a group that was treated with both Hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin. This group showed an even stronger efficacy.

Azithromycin is an antibiotic that has been used for a long time (patented 1981), and has been available in generic form since 2006. It is widely available in Indonesia and is cheap.

A graph from the research, showing drops in positive results for those treated with hydroxychloroquine, and an even more marked drop for those who were treated with both hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin:

As far as the research go, there are some caution. As the others, this is not a double-blind test. It is openlabel, non-randomized. Meaning that there could be researcher bias in the results. It is also not peer-reviewed yet. Further, the test group was small (42 people), 6 people from the treated group dropped out (some because they got worse). Also, both hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin may prolong qt interval, which could result in fatal heart attacks.

And finally, I am definitely NOT a medical professional, so whatever you do, don't start taking these medications based on reading this post.

I bought hydroxychloroquine sulfate /Plaquenil yesterday in Jakarta and the price was 1.8 million Rp (in Europe is 10-15 EUR). Many suppliers are already short of supplies/stok habis.

We were supposed to be in Indonesia from February 6 to March 11, but cancelled and re-booked for October - just 12 hours before our check-in. This was from news I was getting in late January from my coworker directly from his contacts in China. He basically pleaded and made a strong case, from things I was reading and seeing. At the time, our family in Solo, thought it was a bit of an overreaction, and was a pretty hard sell to my wife who was packed with all the oleh-oleh, plans for fun, salons, Solonese food, and good times. Now here we are in a new world...

Here in Houston, Texas, things are slowly grinding to a halt. Each day comes with new closures, and cancellations. We're now up to 60 known cases (and accelerating) in the area, with basically sparse testing - which means we've really got 1000-2000 cases from math models. Recently while caught in a flurry of panic filled shoppers at a grocery store loading their baskets, this song was playing in the background. All I could hear was "Doctor, Doctor, can't you feel me burnin', burnin'. It was kind of surrealistic, almost like something I experienced in a past life.

Many are infected and some (including the pastor) died already from a Protestant sinode GPIB in Bogor..

So, when you see this it doesn't make you laugh ?
Only our country is safe.....

How can anybody with a brain take this seriously ?

No, it means don't travel. (They consider they can not properly control what's coming in and out.)

Yes, many are sold out but Plaquenil 15 tablets can still be bought for approx. 200K. Azythromicin is often only on prescription.

The weird thing is the Chinese went very extreme, up to 500mg twice per day (so a 1000!), while the French kept it at 600mg daily (which is normally the absolute maximum for this drug). It make you wonder how many deaths in China can be attributed to experimentation.

Same here, most think it's a complete overreaction. It doesn't look good for June/July either....

Well, there are probably many countries safer than Australia regarding Covid-19. However, from a gov't stand point and considering all the cancellations, restrictions etc, it is prudent for them to advice all citizens to come home now while commercial travel is still possible. It is much cheaper than having to send out gov't chartered jet to pick up their people from around the world later on.

It seems that Qantas is taking things seriously.

I am beginning to wonder whether we will have an in-person Term 4 at all this school year. For my students, I am providing remote material through our learning management system and marking their papers via Google Drive. Different subjects have different levels of feasibility. Hopefully, the students are not doing hands-on chemistry lab work from home!
