2018 FIFA World Cup

After a surprising win from Japan over Colombia, another surprise; Poland losing from Senegal. Both goals were amazing blunders of the Polish defense.

The first win of an African country in this tournament btw.

And there's a new sex symbol.

Icelandic player Rúrik Gíslason (30) got himself 530.000 followers on Instagram (that's almost 200,000 more than the national population) after two ladies, the Brazilian actress Gabriela Lopes (2 million followers) and Argentina actress Gimena Accardi (2.3 million followers) had to tell the world he was amazingly handsome.

First the Japanese, now the Sengalese - fans stay behind to clean up their litter
Very commendable
Russians probably praying at least one of them gets to the final so they can keep cleaning the stadia hahaha

Messi, Messi, Messi.... :(

And there we have the difference with a Maradona. Talking about GOAT....

Of course the keeper Caballero made a huge mistake and the coach Sampaoli is not capable to make this a winning team.

So it does not look good for Argentina. Let’s see what happens with Iceland and Nigeria, it could be over soon.

Germany got lucky (again), Lineker adapted his 1990 statement which has become an echologia:

Belgium played a good game, but I do wonder what will happen if they meet a real top team. It is kind of iffy to score 5 times out of 25 chances and to undergo 2 goals out of 4 chances. Granted, the guy that went from Chelsea to Dortmund kept on missing, but more importantly something is really wrong in your defense. Kompany didn't play yet, it could be he is spared/saved for the game against England.

England plays tonight.

Seems to be a lot of .... penalties this time so far....

Already more penalties have been taken than during the previous championship (2014) in Brazil. In the group match between Mexico and South Korea, which was the 28th game of this World Cup, penalty number fourteen took place.

During the entire previous sixty four games of the previous World Cup, thirteen penalties were given. The impact of the VAR (video arbitrator) is huge in Russia. Six times a penalty was given after intervention by the referees behind the screens. But also the opposite can happen; referee Kuipers gave Brazil a penalty kick in the game against Costa Rica last Friday. But the video arbitrator advised against it, and after watching the images the Dutchman decided to revert his decision.

The record of the number of penalties is eighteen (in 1990, 1998 and 2002). Of the fourteen penalties awarded in Russia, eleven resulted in a goal. Lionel Messi, Christian Cueva and Gylfi Sigurdsson missed. We have not even ended the group phase yet so I wouldn't be surprised if we get a new record.

I support the VAR. Far too many times there are faults which are not seen by referees while they should end up in a penalty and far too many times there are unfair simulations which end up in a penalty while they shouldn't.

I have really enjoyed having the replay showing a gross simulation by Neymar and the initial penalty given being cancelled.

Likewise I enjoy the match England vs Panama where at half time the score is already 5-0 with two penalties fairly given for faults which, without the VAR, may have been unnoticed. Come on, the second fault against Kane has nothing to do with football but certainly with grappling and MMA.

I agree, with the side note that Neymar should have gotten yellow of course. Standard punishment for a schwalbe. Then he probably would not have been complaining and bitchin' that much during the game. And if so, red after his second card.

Now the VAR isn't flawless either; probably Sweden should have gotten a penalty against Germany?!

After today's 6-1 in England vs Panama, the game England - Belgium will be interesting. Kane vs Lukaku.

Since Panama scored once against England, there could be an exceptional situation in group G; both England and Belgium have six points, and the English and Belgian goal situation is completely identical. They both made eight goals, and both teams got two goals against them. (Plus 6.)

So, if there is no winner and a draw on Thursday in the match between England and Belgium, who will be the group winner?

According to the FIFA regulations, Fair Play will be the decisive factor. In this case that means the number of yellow and red cards. For a yellow card they get one penalty point, for a second yellow card three, for a red card four points.

Currently England is doing better since they have two yellow cards, and Belgium has gotten three. If there are no cards on Thursday, Belgium ends second in group G. But if in England - Belgium, the English receive one more yellow card than the Belgians, they will be on the same level. And then a lucky draw will determine the order.
.

Its even more interesting when you consider that Germany is likely to only get second in their group which means the second place in England/Belgium group will have a much easier time in the knockout stages. This could be a game that no one wants to win.

So the word is there will be major changes in the Belgian team this Thursday against England. Everyone who is somewhat injured or who already has a yellow card, will not play. That means six of the most important plagers. Don't be surprised if the English team will also be completely different.

Tonight an oppositie situation for Uruguay and Russia btw. The winner of that game will probably play against Portugal. Not a great outlook but the other one will meet Spain. Which probably is a more difficult assignment, so both teams will be eager to win.

Tomorrow the stakes are very high. Not so much for France and Croatia, but for Argentina, Nigeria, Denmark, Iceland and.... Australia it will be thrilling.

Finally the real England will turn up - 4-0 to Belgium hahaha

Some pretty dodgy refereeing last night. I don't think the spanish goal should have been allowed....taking the corner from the wrong side when no one was ready. Even the ref was caught out

Uruguay, a team that always had some kind of a 'butcher' image, is becoming more and more of a possible favorite. The team of vampire Suárez (he has a track record of biting) humiliated Russia (which also qualified).

Spain and Portugal did qualify, but it did not go so smooth. Esp. Spain really needs to clean up its acts. Perhaps they encounter what many countries (Netherlands, Belgium, France, England, ...) have seen in the past, the end of the golden generation and the necessity to rebuild with young players?
