2018 FIFA World Cup

France 2 - Australia 1

Granted, probably the French did not have their best day, but it must be said that Bert Van Marwijk has created a solid team of the Soccaroos.

Trent Sainsbury was the man of the match. After the penalty he completely controlled Griezmann (who is tipped as the player of the tournament, next to Neymar and CR7).

So a draw would have been fair but hey that's football.

Go Iceland go......Iceland is the new Brazil....hahaha. I never really grew up watching soccer. What is up with the soccer hooligans? And who are the reining hooligan champions? They seem kind of out of control? Actually, not kind of but out of control.

Ok has anyone been to a world cup game?
1998 in Paris, quarter and semi finale, respectively against Italy and Croatia. Great souvenir, of course.

I followed two years later with Cek Rep. and Portugal in Bruges and Bruxelles for the first round and semi finale of the European cup.

Yes, on Trans TV. But only the aerial version, not via cable (on First Media). So you need an antenna. I think it is also being broadcasted via IndiHome.
I got it on Trans TV without antenna, HD quality. I had to phone to the CS though. We have been told that we will be charged RP 100.000 extra per receivers, agreed about it and magically got it on two channels (989 and 999) a couple of minutes later.
The day after we had a phone call telling us that we shouldn't be charged since we paid a full year in advance a Gold package (or whatever it is called) for each receivers. I will update if we indeed receive any bill.

^Good to know, thanks.

I did Euro2000 as well. And saw The Netherlands beat France, the later European Champions, in their group phase. What a cold shower afterwards.

More surprisingly: Argentina - Iceland 1-1

Not really.

But here you can see that a star player of a country who excels in the regular competition can shine (CR7, Maradona) or completely fail or disappoint in a country tournament (Beckham, Messi, Best, Maldini, ...)

Seems to be a lot of OG and penalties this time so far and late goals too

Today two favorites in action: Germany and Brazil.

I don't expect any surprises there.

Also not a big surprise that Serbia just beat Costa Rica.

Bigger news is that it seems CR7 launched a new trend; facing the national flag when singing the anthem...

Oh and Switzerland is holding its own against Brazil.1-1, but many things can still happen in the next 20 mins or so

Edit: they didn’t, 1-1.

Yes @Euc- , both were rather surprising. The thing with Germany and Brazil is, and perhaps also France, they normally 'grow' during the tournament. So I still expect them to advance rather easily. But who knows.

Now the difference of ending first or second in your group is very important. In this case, especially for England and Belgium in group G. (But also Germany has not done a good deal because of this loss.)

Scenario: If Germany is second in group F, and Brazil wins group E as expected, both World Cup favorites have to compete against each other in the eighth-finals. The winner of that game plays in the quarterfinals against the winner of group G. So: if Belgium or England win the group phase, they play a quarter-final against the winner of Brazil-Germany.
A second place in group G seems much better. Then the English or Belgians must play against the winner of group H (one of the weaker groups), and in the quarterfinals, Mexico or Switzerland would be the opponent. Again, doable. Afterwards, Spain in the semi-finals.

Tonight both Belgium and England play their games.
.

Belgium didn't play a great match, especially in the first half, but Panama played worse so a deserved 3-0 for Belgium.

South Korea was very painful to watch, but the Swedes didn't make a great impression either.

Lucky escape for the English.

Same old England, can barely muster a victory against mighty Tunisia, extra time fortunate lucky goal etc etc now they will go on and win "Harry Kane roars we can do this for the lads, '66 etc etc etc" hhhhmmm yeh right, England are shite and it was such a shame Tunisia only turned up for 90mins not 91 mins, imagine the depression if England only drew the first game hahaha

So, here is the plot - depending on the fixtures
Belgium beat Tunisia - already qualify top
England draw to Panama or lose
England have to beat Belgium but don't
Panama beat Tunisia
Means Belgium don't even have to beat Panama to qualify p1, so they let Panama win and they finish p2

Or England beat Belgium but still dont qualify hahaha
For sure it will be totally against what anyone predicts, and the English will blame VAR or something when they should just be smashing Tunisia and Panama 5-0 each game not 2-1 in injury time

From a patriotic and realistic brit

Come on Iceland, and Nigeria
