Is it true that all banks in Indonesia will be closed from today till the 19th of June? How in the world will financial institutions from around the globe deal with this?

I've been over here since 1974 and have never heard of this happening. So what brought it on this year (if, in fact, it is a reality)?

Yep. Collectieve leave just for Lebaran was always the case, but they added some (4?) days this time.

Whose bright idea was this , first time I’ve ever heard of a country basically shut down for business for such a long time

I'm trying to run a business here, its my 3rd lebaran and I've been fuming since the extra leave days were announced. We are basically shutting up shop for 2 weeks. It's crazy.

You don't HAVE to follow the "cuti bersama", and many private companies who do follow forcefully cut the additional days off from the annual leave allowance.

Our office doesn't follow it at all, if you want off you take leave, don't take leave you go to work.

Although for private (smaller) businesses it is not mandatory, it is almost impossible to refuse. And you have to hope (as with maids etc.) they do come back.

Looking at RuKo’s in Kelapa Gading and Sunter, my guesstimate is that 80% is already closed. And we’re not even there yet.

Not refuse, but they'll just eat up their own Annual Leave allowance..

I initially wasn't that bothered by this as I have experienced long shutdowns in other countries (China for example) but then my internet banking was basically blocked for a week and now i really wonder how the country will function. I don't need a branch but the fact that NO transfers can be made at all between banks for a week is absolutely insane. Worse than that the money was taken from my account and is effectively in limbo for until the 19th!!!

Not true
ATM transactions still work instantly for same bank to bank transfers
eg bca to bca via atm machine is instant and still works
I think actually even online klik bca still works instantly for bca-bca

And when the ATMs run out of cash as some do during Eid, who will refill them

I don't class ATM transfers as internet banking. It maybe that within the same bank online banking will allow transfers but definitely between banks is shut down from 11th to 19th. This also means that any company that missed the early salary date wouldn't be able to make the transfer even though it is a full 5 days before the actual main holiday day. My company was ok but on the personal side there were some bonuses that wont go out on time now.

Yesterday a queue of 150 people at CIMB which was exceptionally open. Many here still don't have debit cards etc.

Cash refills for bank ATMS come from security companies not from bank directly

There is a system in place, either they refill every 48hours or so or the machine automatically sends a message it needs refilling

When did you ever seriously ever see an "empty" atm here?

Sorry I have, the BCA ATM at the local Indo mart was empty last year, my wife tells me the banks don’t fill the ATMs, it’s done via the bank of Indonesia, so all their staff will be working through Eid??

My Indonesian wife explained that the costs of going home and then returning are considerable for many families. The extra leave is to effectively give them better value for their expenditure.

Yes "backroom" staff and operations often still work, just not the retail staff
Also things like ATM refilling etc come under a different auspice so would not usually be affected during holidays

Essentially all the ATMs in our southeast Jakarta area were empty as of Saturday afternoon.

Expected it (as French I am used.to this every long weekend or strike...)
Hence I did a preventive strike well before !
Not that much money is needed here deep in the jungle....

Cue the bitcoin devotees who are strangely still silent since it plummeted and exchanges got hacked and now all the traders are promoting "blockchain" instead now
Before it was coffee, then timeshare holidays (you should be here) then oriflame and herbalife then bitcoin
Whatever next for the MLM scammers?
