Actress/Singer Lucinta Luna has been reported to the police for insulting the city of Manokwari, the capital of West Papua. Ms. Luna posted a video on Instagram where she intentionally mispronounced the name of the city to make the first syllable sound like the word for male genitalia.

For this ridiculously minor thing, a group of people representing the city has issued a demand that she be arrested and pay a fine of Rp 100B. The actress has issued an apology (appropriately also as an Instagram video), but it is unclear whether the police will continue to pursue the case.

Just a reminder to all here that there is no such thing as free speech in Indonesia, and to be careful who you are insulting online, especially if you are identifiable.

Now here’s the difference, a Chinese gentleman said Jokowi should be shot, result, 5 years jail and 500,000000rp fine
In England a labor politician said PM May should be hung, result, loud cheers

Great idea, free iodine pills for Indonesian selebrities. Where can I donate?
Nah, better to start with the radical jihadis, whose IQ's seem to be the lowest. Or at least their children, to give them half a chance in life.

I misunderstood. I thought the low IQ reference was to West Papuan municipal officials rather than the actress.

Iodine pills for all!

The American solution -- there is no malady that drugs, a pill, cannot solve.

But seriously, the proposition that low IQ people populate the third world is pretty Trumpian, i.e. racist. Beyond the proposition that said comparative stupidity exists, the notion that it can be explained by iodine deficiencies, sounds to me like a cure searching for a disease.

I agree, we should be careful about making assumptions about the IQ of people in poorer nations/ parts of nations (it is very colonial of us). However the world bank confirms that at least 30% of Indonesian kids are growth stunted due to lack of adequate nutrition. This physically measurable attribute I'm sure correlates with IQ (although i really hate using IQ as a measure of intelligence, it is so flawed). But yes a pill isn't the solution!

You're both right, of course. I withdraw my comment. I only meant it as a silly joke, not something to be taken seriously. But still, I wish I hadn't said it.

The term 'pill' suggests some sort of pharmaceutical concoction developed in a laboratory. Iodine is an element, in fact it's number 53 on the Periodic Table. The lack of iodine in the diet has been directly correlated with development issues in children and low intelligence quotient (which of course carries on into adulthood). This is a serious problem in the developing world and a conspiracy theorist might assume it is intentional...

You're not one of those conspiracy theorists yourself, I hope? Because despite my ignorant joke, the causes and consequences of inadequate iodine have been on my radar for years (my mother had an iodine allergy, supposedly, and was always on the lookout for salt without iodine added, back in the day before sea salt was all the rage, so it was a subject I've taken an interest in since childhood). And as conspiracies go, a developed-world plot to deny iodine to the world's poor seems remarkably tenuous, even by the nearly non-existent standards of the tin-foil hat crowd.

No, not one of the conspiracy theorists... Just stating the facts that iodine deficiency can cause low IQ, and low IQ seems to be a problem in Indonesia as evidenced by how easily the so-called pious masses can be influenced, even to the extent of violence, by rumor, innuendo and suspicion. The same thing can be seen in countries like Bangladesh, India and Pakistan, where iodine deficiency is also an issue..

How about the "pious masses" of the United States? Rumor, innuendo and suspicion elected the current President.

No, lack of iodine and brain was the cause .....
And it seems even billionaires suffer from it ....
But, ok, lets stick to the thread....

Poor education is certainly an issue, but then even the best education won't be much help if the IQ is lacking...

well, in my observation the people of Papuan are very proud people. in a sense they are very traditional. so i understand why small matter like this can become troublesome, as if the artist insulted their holy ancestor or something, heck their resolution if there is problem between community is clan war, any other way deemed unsatisfactory for them. they are proud and conservative people.

as for the education standpoint, the way i see it the Old Generation are very conservative they don't feel the need of education they can just hunt in the forest, fill their bellies and lazying around all month doing stuff, but the young one started to get educated. no matter how good the goodwill to educate people, if the people doesn't want it, it become pointless.
