Indonesia is well known for its use of lotions, potions and belief in the supernatural. Jamu is a herbal medicine mixture of roots, bark, flowers, seeds, leaves and fruits. It is said to have originated from the Mataram Kingdom some 1300 years ago and is supposed to be a cure all for a wide range of ailments and health concerns, even vagina tightening.

Aisyah Llewellyn puts one of Java's most popular natural remedies to the test in pursuit of maintaining taut "bits" in a rather humorous piece she penned recently.

I don’t really get jamu, but I figure it must be popular for a reason. There are enough shops peddling the stuff to suggest it does something, so I decide to trial a few different varieties and see for myself. And of course, I start with the strangest one.

Yes, I’m going to try a medicine that supposedly shrinks vaginas, and will therefore enhance sexual pleasure. Because surely this is every woman’s dream, right? And yes, there are some wanky misogynistic overtones about all this but I decide not to think about it.

It arrives and looks like manure. There are even little bits of what look like straw floating on the surface. God, it’s bitter. Thoughtfully she has prepared a small shot glass as a chaser which has warm ginger in it mixed with honey. I want ten more of these and hold the jamu

n case anything goes wrong and my vagina spontaneously combusts.

Hahahahahahahaah.....

But from my wife and her friends stories some people died because of that stuff.

I also asked my wife, who are those people with large basket on their back with many bottles inside? She said they are like herbalists.

I used to buy packets of Nyonya Meneer jamu for all my friends back in the US - I don't know if the same stuff is still for sale, but back in the day they sold packets with wonderful fractured English that said things like "for make vagina dry so husband like." Needless to say this produced much merriment. Whether it produced dry vaginas, I cannot say as I never had the courage to partake, myself.

When I don't buy a round of drinks, people call me a tight c*nt

Is this related?

When I used to fly turn-round flights into Jakarta, where the crew stayed on the aircraft, I noticed there was always a ground-crew giving our girl attendants packages for cash. Thinking something nefarious was going on I asked the Chief Attendant to investigate and he said the girls were just picking up their 'stash' of Jamu.
Now, really concerned, I wanted to know "what's this Jamu?". After the explanation and, being a single guy, I thereafter made note of which girls were doing the transactions...for future reference and just in case!!!

In what seems like post #323 explaining that vaginas don’t need cleaning, I present the cucumber vagina cleanse.

Apparently some women are peeling cucumbers inserting them vaginally and then twisting them around for up to 20 minutes to refresh or cleanse or flush or something. This isn’t just a weird Facebook thing one person did once. I Googled “cucumber vagina cleanse” (God help me, I did) and WAS HORRIFIED. There are even videos but I’m not giving them the traffic. If you want to watch you are on your own.

If you have a vagina you should definitely not do this.

VAGINAS ARE NOT DIRTY

That is in capitals because I am yelling.

This idea that some kind of vaginal cleansing is required, be it with a peeled cucumber or the “feminine washes” sold at drug stores, is misogyny dressed up as health care and I am having none of it. Vaginas are not dirty.

ATTEMPTS AT “CLEANING” THE VAGINA ACTUALLY DAMAGE THE VAGINA

Also yelling.

Study after study after study tells us that douches, cleanses, steams, vinegar, pH-balancing products, aloe, colloidal silver, garlic or whatever else passing as the vaginal snake oil du jour at best do nothing but have real potential for harming good bacteria and/or disrupting the mucosal surface. I mean 20 minutes of cucumber twisting? (As a side note, I don’t spend 20 minutes cleaning anything. Ever. Even a surgical scrub only takes 5 minutes!)

By damaging lactobacilli and the mucosa, attempts at vaginal cleaning increase a woman’s risk of contracting HIV or gonorrhea if she is exposed. Paradoxically it will also cause odor.

Yes, but I think the point being is that January vaginal treatments are unnecessary and possibly harmful.

Oh boy, I am certain I meant to type 'any' not 'January; a rather unfortunate autocorrect.
