The future and the role of Artificial intelligence.

I love those fake Tai Chi ads.

They make these videos on the beach etc. which look a bit like scenes of the first Avatar movie. They must spend millions on this advertising, bombarding eh … millions of people with that crap.

It seems they deliberately make these unbelievably crappy advts to appeal to an uncritical segement of the population who actually respond. It doesn't matter that the majority of people would see them as rubbish.

A very good target group is the real estate sector. It’s amazing what a simple AI improvement can do to a living room or terrace. And that does look real. Just try something in WA while selecting a picture; results are amazing.

Our son just told me there’s a word for it: ‘housefishing’.

I’m getting old.

The AI hardware/chips value chain, For those who are interested in observing the AI chips value chain which could be linked to investing opportunity. But the AI chips and foundries is just one layer/stack of the AIs, the others are e.g Energy, Infrastructure, Models, and Applications.

Understanding the value chain in investing is just one thing to see whether they deserve a premium price, but at the end, it will all come to the most important thing e.g the valuation.

"There are more rules in Australia that regulate opening a cafe or pouring a beer than for the operation of cutting-edge AI systems."

I like this quote above from a new ABC article about a rogue AI breaking out of its "safety net" and hacking another AI website. Quite ominous.

On a more mundane level, this morning I asked Google if Indonesians and Australians needed tourist visas to enter China. The first response said neither Indonesians or Australians need tourist visas if entering China before December 1 2026. Checking a little while later it said both Indonesians and Australians need visas.

I checked with the Chinese embassy in Jakarta and was advised that Australians have visa free tourist entry until December 1 2026. Indonesians need to apply for a visa.

As I have said and thought (myself) all along

It's all in a name

ARTIFICIAL intelligence implies fake not real etc etc

So I would never ever trust anything it says and always check things

If it was ALTERNATIVE then maybe

All it seems to me is to be able to do somethings faster and maybe make some amusing cartoons

But to ask it about important serious legal etc matters is just suicidal and then blame the computer later

Off topic but reminds me of the fact that in the good old US of A, more people have been arrested and charged for supposedly damaging the pool of reflection than anything anyone to do with Epstein files except the man himself and wasn't that for financial?

I mean, a 350 ft slit with a boxcutter in a 6' deep pool and then it turns out it was Trump's own limo driving on it that did the damage

But you have to balance that against human intelligence and I question how much of that is left nowadays - everybody is walking around with their faces in their phones... or standing on harbour walls at a high stormy tide, trying to get a cool selfie and getting swept away to sea- the Darwin factor at play .

So in my mind AI is a tool , it is useful as are many tools but I am not yet sufficiently convinced to let a hammer drive my car :D

For fun I pitch chat gpt against Google Ai - and basically let them bash it out especially over nitpicky questions relevant to obscure Indonesian local government regulations
- we recently had hoops to jump through with such things and to be fair after much meddling and rechecking by me they came up with useful and pertinent info that I was able to track down in legal docs.
However the human at the end-point stated the laws I had were not applicable in our area
- so, I took the law print-out with me and put it in front of him - he backed down.
Said it was ok what we were doing and to disregard his local govt instructions . funny that ain't it, I would never have guessed at that being the response ;)
BUT that one unintelligent human cost me a half a day of time and a lot of IDR to make the trip to see him. Less funny- for the actual 5 minutes talking with him.

Most scientists, hedge funds, and other industry professionals use AI to optimise their analysis and decision-making. The difference is their approach, it differs from that of casual users. Experts at institutions like DeepMind or elite quantitative (quant) hedge funds deeply understand the limitations of AI. Because they possess solid foundational knowledge, they can apply critical judgement and know exactly when to rely on these tools and when to disregard it.

A good example is COVID-19, how DeepMind stepped in at the very beginning of the pandemic to provide scientists with critical data. It is also used to crack and decode raw genetic data at a speedy phase.

In finance and investing is another example. The hedge funds are using the AI to help them; but for financial influencers attempting to use AI quantitative tools to get a signal for buy/hold/sell without a fundamental grasp of financial accounting, reading financial statement, understanding multiples, valuations is an almost guaranteed for heavy financial losses for their followers. We have seen many examples from social media, the story of fake financial gurus, influencers who are followed by many gen-z in investing in cryptos, or highly risky investment.

Also remember the current state of AIs is just about reaching a narrow intelligence stage. Currently, it could only beat human in a very specific area where a repetitive task, calculating millions of probabilities in a very short time, and a lot of memory is required such as in chess, gene/DNA sequencing, etc. It has not reached the Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), let alone the Artificial Superintelligence (ASI). In playing chess for instance in rule base approach the AI win against human but the kid for instance has a general intelligence so when he played chess with AI machine/engine and they get bored they just remove the power, destroyed the engine, the kid win. But if it is a rule base is respected, even the no.1 chess player Magnus Carlsen refuse to play with the modern chess engine powered by the AI in a real match such as the modern Stockfish because he knows he will be defeated.

Being highly intelligent or an expert in AI does not automatically make someone a successful investor in AI. This week's sharp market selloff is a powerful reminder. The story of Leopold Aschenbrenner is worth reading. Many articles, news have already covered the lessons from it especially with highly leveraged investing.

Borrowing money to play the market or using margin is a very risky business.
Private small investors should never do it.
The big guys, well they know the risk.....
