Exotic foods

Another option is the Grand Lucky in Kuta or Sanur or so, they’re like the ones in Jakarta, large.

Why do you debate the origin, name, etc? I just asked where in Bali, are there stores, that sell these! I want to have it at home! I don't want to go to Restaurants! Greek restaurants on Bali?

In GL:

Can you stop nagging and complaining now? 🥴

.

The pita is in the Mexican food section and the hummus next to the cheese in the coolers. (In Sanur.) Good luck.

If you see the price of cheese 🧀 or so here, you could argue that food is much more exotic.

For a ball like that I would pay €15 in my home country instead of €60 here.

Adding to the exotism is the fact they have brand names nobody in the ‘originating’ country ever heard of. Victoria cheese? 🤔

The same for butter (mentega, not margarine) btw. The most popular brand here in Indonesia is Wisman. Me, many years ago: “Hmm, never heard of it, that sounds German, ah it’s spelled Wysman. So actually it should be Wijsman.” Then I found out it is in fact a Dutch company specialized on exporting canned butter to hot climate countries.

Same for protein powder ...
Very expensive here.

Yep, some prices are ridiculous.
I have a friend well connected in the F & B world, he buys directly from importers / wholesalers, the price is about half....
Personally yes, 80k for a President butter, 55k for French cooking cream, 170 k for French Emmental, 160 k for 500 ml Italian olive oil, 350 k for 12 frozen US scallops, etc..... But I buy it because I cook and eat French and I want quality products.

The price for the De Jong/Victoria Edam ball is indeed absolutely ridiculous. The brand is owned by FrieslandCampina that you probably know.
It is imported by Sukanda Djaya who sells it in Bali to supermarkets like GL around Rp 240.000 / kg. You could probably buy it around that price in their cabang in Denpasar.

In Manado, we sell the 1,75 kg ball to less than half of what GL sells it in Bali apparently, while the transport cost by reefer containers from JKT to MDC add a lot to our cost compared to the Balinese or Javanese based outlets. Basically if I would air cargo it to you from Manado it would arrive to you for probably still a 30% lower price than GL.

Yes, the prices of some products in the supermarkets are crazy.
And this is why ... I think.

My neighbor, a Turk, who moved here to Jakarta 3 years ago, told me the following. He sells industrial power generators here. In the beginning, he approached the managers and directors of for example hospitals and factories directly instead of contacting their suppliers. The suppliers have blacklisted him.

He says that if you want to sell your products (e.g. Dutch cheese) in supermarkets, you have to approach the supplier of the supermarket. He will then ensure that your products are sold in supermarkets, but only with a 'required incentive'. Of course, 'this incentive' ensures that the price of the products increases.

Technical good such are machines have regional and country distributors, and it is not allowed to sell the goods out of them, otherwise they would compete between themselves.

The "official distributors" usually have an exclusivity clause with the OEM.
And they care about maintenance and after sales !

With all due respect, it's BS when it comes to F&B @Samoerai.

We sell directly F&B products to supermarket and to food service companies so I have a bit of experience with it.

All supermarkets work with an array of suppliers, not only one or an handful of them. They work with appointed distributors, importers and people like us who are not appointed distributors of brands nor importers but have a wide range of products to offer at competitive price and, as importantly, flexible terms of payment. We can deal with up to 90 days T.O.P if the business is worth it and this is not something a distributor or an importer would even consider and I guess it would be the same for a generator supplier?

A Supermarket or a Hotel/Resort or any Food Service company would prefer to work with people they have tested the reliability, both in terms of price and stock, and with companies with a large offer rather than with the first guy who knock on their door with a limited range of product. It's only fair I think. I do the same to be honest. I would not purchase products and propose them to our clients unless I have an absolute confidence that their supplier can provide them with a minimum of shortage for example... or if I am unable to get enough stock to remedy to it.

We've build up our good reputation on the fact that we very rarely answer "kosong" to our clients and always have many product that you would not find anywhere else in our region than through us. This is what has opened up the doors of many of our clients. This, and definitely not paying bribes, which we never did.

Once you have established a fair business relation with a supermarket then you can propose whatever F&B product you have as long as it makes sense and that you accept to deal with retur which is something you have to think about wisely before.

The prices are so expensive in GL is because they know full well that the bule clients crave for the product they sell and often don't have the knowledge of where to shop for a decent price. Ask @dafluff if he would be buying a ball of Edam for Rp 1 juta in GL? He has grown up there and I am sure he knows where to buy his cheese, wine or other imported stuff. :giggle:

Yup, you can get edam cheese in Bali for Rp. 240K per kg and Gouda for Rp. 215k.
A box of 160 pcs 30 gr frozen croissants for Rp 300k only.

Origin of that cheese ?
300.000 : 160 = 1875 Rp / piece
Good luck with the quality.....

Any decent croissant in a bakery goes for 20k

Actually, not so 'mahal'. Almost same price as in 'Belanda'.

Croissants in the air fryer....
Mon Dieu ! 😫😫😫😫

Bon, at 2000 Rp it wouldn't make much difference....
Yes, I use air fryer if only for 2 pcs, will use oven if more than 3 pcs. A bit dryer but not too bad been doing like this for more than 5 years, practically almost every day.
I believe many cafe in Bali and jakarta sell this croissant at Rp. 15k or even more.

Tomorrow morning I'm going to Denpasar to get 1 box for our 1 months stock.
