Working with a 'family reunification visa'

Hi there,

My husband has been offered a job in Indonesia. They will take care of the workpermit/limited stay visa and a family reunification visa for me (his wife) and 3 daughters (below 18 years).

My question is.
Is it allowed for me (with a family reunification visa) to start my own little business, like making schoolbags and other stuffs?

Unfortunately, no. You can not do it legally on a family reunification visa where the husband/wife holding the main visa and work permit is a foreigner.

We are both foreigners. We both have dutch nationality and want to move to indonesia because of this job they offered him

As already explained by Atlantis, you are unable to work and/or start a business on a reunification visa (ie. KITAS sponsored by another KITAS holder who is working).

However, many "trailing spouses" have been able to find their own job (and sponsorship), including some members of this forum.

Also there are numerous other distractions while you are in Indonesia, such as taking a class or two, and of course travel.

How long is your husband's assignment?

They give him a 5 years contract.
But i am not a housewife type. I would like to do something to spend my days. . Im a graphic designer and i like to design and i would like to print my designs on bags and stuffs and sell them. Is it maybe an idea if my husband (who has a work permit) starts a small business and i will help him with this business by making the prints?

The work permit of your husband clearly defines what his activities and location are. So if you plan to do something, make sure he is not involved.

Of course you could always 'have a hobby' but make sure it is not seen as a job. The moment you sell something, you take a risk; there are many governmental calls nowadays to report illegal foreign workers and jealousy can be big here.

To have something to do; there are many yayasan (stichting, goede doelen) and church possibilities, for instance for animal welfare. (Search for JAAN on Facebook for example, there are more.)

If you plan to sell something online, most here is done via Facebook and Instagram. But the problem is of course you need to get contacts first. An alternative is OLX.co.id. There is also a FB group called Jakarta Buy and Sell Community, more for expats.

First of all you need a bank account and link it with any online e-commerce place that you are planning to sell your stuff. Can you open bank account on your visa? If I am not mistaken anything below 54 jt per tax year should not trigger anything from the tax office (but bear in mind this is only my assumption I am not tax expert). And this is profit not turnover.

I am selling online plain cotton t-shirts. Due to minuscule profit (huge competition) I would classify it as hobby. It keeps me busy. I do like your idea of having printouts and I do have a nearby factory for doing printouts as well as embroidery who knows maybe we can join our forces? If yes please PM me.
