What to do about bonfires

we have a large vacant plot of land next to our house, we’ve had a squatter and his family now for about 3 years, I really aren’t bothered where he lives and on occasion helped him, but fairly recently he has taken to lighting bonfires almost every day, with the resultant smoke and ash blowing over our house and others, we’ve all complained to no avail, the RT man is as useless as tits on a bull, we could resort to violence but that’s not the way to go, only taking a legal way is what is aimed for, so how would one go about that, nobody knows who the land belongs, so that’s a dead end, asking him nicely doesn’t work, any ideas

I just cannot wait to see the defenders of anointed "traditions" tell you how "Only a bule would b*tch about smelling a poor person's fire," or some other such nonsense.

Well it’s not just me, several neighbours have had a moan, but he just ignores every one, I think he is a bit crackers, he just sends his wife out to work, but she doesn’t seem to work for long, they have set up a little coffee stall, but odd motor cyclist, no locals use it, a neighbour had his motor bike stolen, he blames the old man for his loss and the odd motor cyclists who use the coffee stall, I’m not bothered by the coffee stall, but he is infuriating his neighbours, he has already had a falling out with the man opposite, so I’m just trying to stop things getting out of hand like they can do

This is totally different to blocking the road and I am sure eventually someone will "have a word"

Maybe needs the womens gentle persuasion, to complain about her cuci baju now bau of smoke?

That poor fellow must be running out of his pulsa and has been trying to send smoke signals inviting all his mates in the hood for a hand ball session and have a few Tinnies ?

Escalate to the RW and visit the Kantor Lurah if (s)he refuses to act. They probably know who the owner is also (but willing to tell you is a different story).

If you want to make sure you need to check at BPN (Badan Pertanahan National) who it belongs to.

I had some similar issues next door with workers at night, the Pak RT and SatPam even made an official warning document and handed it over to the owner.

What time of day is he lighting the fires?

Is it that he is burning the family trash each evening?
Could it be he thinks the smoke will keep the mozzies away?

If you can find out the "why" , you can find a way to negotiate through the pitfalls without a fight, hopefully.

maybe help him make a fire pit with a bit of a chimney? or talk to him about ways to keep mosquitoes away- in a general convo.

Not going to be easy & I'm probably the last person to advise considering my last neigbour / fire related communication:
I had just cleaned the house from top to bottom / sofa cushions washed the whole kit& kabudle...laundry outdrying, windows open catching the breeze & neighbour on empty plot of land lit 4 bonfires in a row with the breeze blowing the smoke from all of them all over my laundry& in my windows. No exaggeration, it was as if my house was on fire, there was that much smoke.
I lost the plot... screaming & yelling at him thru the window about what a feking idiot he was... oops.
I did go out & apologise for losing my temper & took some cold drinks out for him & his mrs. & Suggested that just the 1 fire in the corner furthest away from the houses would be acceptable- he hasn't been back since, I can't imagine why. Inserts *angel face*

I'm somewhat the same B_a. And I'm the only one who dares to speak up. When the house was filled with smoke, I went there and started screaming, others here were sh!tting their pants. No conflict! No conflict! But afterwards they were happy.

My daughter will check out the address jstar kindly gave me to see who ownes the land, the fires can be anytime during daylight hours, the man sadly is brain dead no matter who shouts at him, it’s mostly it seems to be garden rubbish he burns, no idea where it all comes from, he is very strange, he chopped down two large banana trees and they fell up agaist our wall, I had to finish it off, no idea why he chopped them down
