An undersea cable is presently being laid between Manado and Los Angeles. I spoke with someone familiar with the project and learned it's behind schedule and is now slated to be completed in 2019.
This cable will improve Internet connectivity for much of SE Asia. I'm an IT engineer and strongly believe that a lot of opportunities will be created namely for call centers, off-shore IT companies (development, support, etc), and most interesting data centers. Companies with global presence like Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Akami will certainly research whether it makes sense to host data centers near where the cable terminates in Manado. If the local government is wise they'll lobby for this and offer incentives to both Internet giants and startups to materialize the huge potential this creates to become a tech hub.
