Typical tuition (fees) at Indonesian colleges/universities?

^ Your driver got some cojones talking to you like that but either he has regarded you as a close family member or he is a little rough around the edge trying to bring up delicate subjects like that without much finesse and diplomacy, so he came up rather short.

Nevertheless he concludes wrongly or rightly that his network of employers recognized valuable and steady employees with Year of Service Gifts- ranging maybe from a used car to a much coveted gold watch- along with other generous perks and benefits like tuition assistants, health insurance, annuity/pension and whatnot.

I believe you will do the right things and keep the time honored tradition alive, maybe?

Suggest you'll pay for her tuition, after he pays for your son's college expenses.

Sometimes I think local guys hear about these stories of Bule largess, and figure you live in a big house, drive a nice car, that 100-150 juta is sofa change to you.

Sorry, I'm not on line much these days as I am setting up camp in an empty house on the Big Island (Hawaii) so my son and I can stay here over the summer (he has a summer job here as an ESL aide -- I guess his background as a native English speaker raised internationally helped him get the position). But anyway, a small update on what we've since learned/decided:

The first semester tuition bill is very high, but it includes some kind of one-time capital costs. The expectation is that every semester following (for 4-5 years, we're told) will be 6 or 7 juta. So, tons of money, but not quite as insane as it first seemed.

My husband is suggesting that we tell our driver he can set up a savings account and we will match up to a certain amount every quarter. (My response was, "how do we know the bank balance is truly savings - what if he puts in all his cash, shows us the balance, then withdraws it after we make the matching payment?" But he has a solution to that, I forget what.) Also, we want to see whatever passes for grades/report cards on a regular basis to be sure his daughter is making good on the money being spent on her.

So, no final decision yet on what we'll do. But I imagine we will make some kind of regular contribution as long as certain conditions can be met.

We just signed our nephew up for tourism at Mataram University. The first term is 8.4 juta, second term is 5.1 and the 3rd and 4th terms are 4.2

I am sorry but I stopped reading after this. It is just ridiculous. Indonesian people are like this they do things quietly behind your back and then suddenly popup with some ridiculous "due to be paid now" bills to be covered by employer. I am listening to such stories every day from my wife which is "politely" declining - refusing to pay for the bills showing them contracts from BPJS, private medical cover, other insurance companies t&c, contracts of employment, taxation law. Recently she simply says please contact the relevant party for asking questions. The most important I guess would be: what is his employment contract (if he has got one) saying about it? Does it even mention it? It has to be specifically mentioned in the contract that the employer will cover the tuition fees. If it is not mentioned by default it means NO. IT is also for high profile people in the companies not avg. Joe working in assembly line or truck/car driver. I don't think even PT. Astra (which is generous for karyawan with bonuses) are going to cover such a ridiculous demand.
