Travelling with a new empty passport

I recently got a new passport and will be leaving the country for a holiday soon. Can I travel with my new empty passport and bring along the old one for evidence? or do I need to do something at imigrasi?
I'm on a kitap and have about 6 months left on my merp.

Will they get your MERP stamp transferred to your new passport after you re-enter the country?

No you have to do that at immigration office and it costs a bit. I dont believe there is a deadline so you might be ok to wait till it needs renewing anyway. I did about 3 trips with 2 passports as i didnt have time to do the transfer. Probably was around 2 months.

I had my Kitap and MERP transferred to a new passport a few years ago at South Jakarta Imigrassi dropped off one day and picked up the next. I don't remember the charge, but it was minimal.
