The practice test to get a driving licence. If you pass you could become a circus performer !!!

The police traffic chief is arguing that if compare the cost of issuing a driving licence in Japan, the cost of issuing a driving licence in Indonesia is cheap. Could you believe this statement comes from a person who is the chief of traffic Police ??? He said in Japan it could reach IDR40m. It is the same person who also propose that the parliament to issue a law for more special plate number for cars with the cost of IDR500m. While it seems it makes sense he has not explained how they could ensure that the money collected will go the the government, no negotiation under the table, considering various cases discovered among the Indonesian policemen. Let alone if you compare the CPI (corruption perception index) between JP and ID.

@pantaiema The GDP per capita at the bottom plainly shows one of the start differences. Another being that Japan is a smaller country than Indonesia and has extensive and efficient public transit. The USA has double the GDP per capita as Japan, but is a large country without good public transit, and most states driver's license cost are between 300,000-1,000,000 rupiah.

@R Cameron I am fully aware that GDP(PPP) per capita is not a perfect indicator to measure the prosperity, affluence of individual person living in the country, as it does not take into account factors such as inequality or the distribution of wealth. This is especially true for small countries with small population, but high number of big MNCs presence.

A good example for this is IE and LU in Europe. Ireland GDP per capita in 2022 was usd74,852 and PPP usd143,870. Luxembourg's GDP per capita in 2022 was usd115,683 and PPP usd142,214. This is because these countries are home for big multinational companies. A few examples, Ireland is the home for Google in Europe, while Luxemburg is the home for Amazon in Europe. But the at-risk-of-poverty rate in Ireland was 13.1% in 2022, which means that 13.1% of the Irish population had an income below 60% of the national median income.

Other good examples in Asian region are Singapore, Hong Kong (If considered on its own, separated from China).

But there is no single indicator could represent this. The world bank and other international organisations produce a matrix to comprise multiple indicators, but this is not the point of discussion in this thread.

Out of curiosity I checked, and it could actually cost more

As of 2022, the fee for an English-speaking foreigner to obtain a license from a Japanese driving school is about ¥500,000 (or about US$4556).

Note that it includes the lessons at the driving school though, and I bet it will be cheaper if you speak Japanese

For completeness, the international driving permit is also required for short term visitors in addition to their national license (whereas some countries don't require this)

Based on the description there - personally I would just take public transportation 😅
