Hi, I've got a child with autism. I was wondering if anyone knew any schools in Bali that have a special education class - children with an IEP, Autism, Special needs etc? My son doesn't have behavior issues, however he is not very verbal and struggles with life skills. His academic scores are good. He could read at 3 years old.

The child is an Indonesian Citizen if that's relevant. Thanks

Hi Sprocket,

There are a few schools in Bali that are likely to be able to support your son and one that actively markets for children with special educational needs. However, these are all private businesses and so it is definitely worth "shopping around" and having a look at each of them before making any decisions. Will the schools let you meet students and teachers as opposed to just marketing staff etc? Consider that when visiting. Ask for a tour and see if you can walk by some classrooms to see the lessons that are being taught in real time. Many schools here will have something to accommodate special educational needs, but these will be of varying quality. I work as a teacher in Jakarta and not Bali, so I can't comment first hand but these are some places to consider in your search:

(1) ProEd Global School: https://proedschool.com/

(2) Canggu Community School: https://www.ccsbali.com/

(3) Bali Island School: https://baliinternationalschool.com/

(4) Green School Bali: https://www.greenschool.org/bali/

(5) Australian Independent School Bali: https://www.ais-indonesia.com/

(6) Dyatmika School: https://dyatmika.org/en/home/

(7) Sanur School: https://sisbali.sch.id/

(8) Sunrise School Bali: https://sunriseschoolbali.com/

Good luck and I hope that you are able to find a school that suits the needs of your child. Good luck.

Hi Lee,

My family and I will be moving to Jakarta in late Q1 / early Q2 next year and I have a 5-year-old son diagnosed with ASD. I was doing some research and stumble upon your reply to this post. Would you be able to kindly share what available options are there in Jakarta for him (i.e schools, therapy centers etc.)?

Thank you for your kind response in advance.

Regards,
Faye

Hi Faye,

Sorry for the late reply. I just got back from winter break and took a tech detox over the hols. For Autism Spectrum Disorder, I'm not sure because I am not an expert and most schools that I know of in Jakarta are private businesses. Personally, I would be very wary of schools saying that they can differentiate unless they show specific evidence of this in teacher/counselor qualifications, small class sizes and individual education plans.

My suggestion would be to visit schools or centers that sound interesting and get a feel of the places that feel homely and welcoming. Schooling here for SEN is likely to be very expensive. The articles linked below might be a good start for some ideas but only trust your instincts and what feels right for your wee lad. Don't fall prey to any "style over substance" marketing.

Hope this helps and apologies that I can't offer too much in the way of robust advice.

All the best,

Lee
