Somewhere along the line we have lost our sons' affidavit letter for his dual nationality.

Any info on getting a replacement from immigration?

Thanks,

No 20 copies of it somewhere? I try to scan or at least take a picture of anything important. My wife keeps a master folder with copies of everything, too.

Yes, had it all on a computer but the system crashed so all lost. Anyway, not to worry as I found the thing (finally) after a full search through the house.

Cheers,

Trick is also to always email it to yourself and then you always have it wherever you are in the world, just one click away

Unless you use Yahoo Mail :wall:

I nowadays use WhatsApp to send a pic of important docs. Then we both have them and they are also saved in a (local device) folder. And backed up in iCloud etc. of course.

Why not yahoo? Yeh but if you lose your phone or your i-cloud gets hacked?? No pics etc

If you have it on email then you can access your email anywhere "safely" to print off a copy of a doc
How can you access your w/a if you lose your phone, likewise if you trying to access your icloud from a dodgy internet cafe in rio or something? If not use Mac Apple etc?

It's not only in my WA but also in hers. And you don't need WA or internet since the files you send are also automatically stored locally. Esp. in buildings with a lot of concrete, the connection can be lost and then you stand there; "sorry need to go outside". And the backup is not only iCloud (from the iPhone) but also Google Drive (from her Android phone). In e-mail systems there can always be issues with attachments, esp. in the Yahoo App they get corrupted rather easily, and if the e-mails are years old, it takes forever to reload them. I never use WiFi I don't know btw; the 4G is dirt cheap and fast enough.

The risk of being hacked is the same between yahoo and icloud (in fact, yahoo got hacked before). But icloud is better because it actually had built in storage and automatic backup of files on the phone, iPad, Mac can be set.

The only safe way of backing up is redundancy. Having several back ups in completely independent places online and offline.

I have a friend who could not leave; son came in on his expat country origin passport while his Indonesian passport had expired. Immigrasi demanded the original birth certificate etc etc etc before moving forward. I'm suggesting to have original copies wherever possible - perhaps a set with the parents here.

Ok understood - hacking issue, I thought you meant storage size
Anyway moral is have it backed up in several accessible places on and offline

I have one email account that I use just to send scanned doc to my self. Only me and wife access it. Never have used it for anything else so I think it's more secure.
