A thanks/like is ok - saves on filling up threads with "i agree" or "cheers for that " stuff

I am at a loss to understand how an "I agree" comment clutters up an infinite medium for expression; if we deleted all inane, meaningless, and trivial posts, there would be a lot of shit hitting the shredder before simple "I agree" postings.

That being said, if you are unable to explain why you are in agreement with a particular comment, unable to provide a bit of flavor and meaning to a like-minded opinion, to advance the conversation, perhaps it would be best to give some more thought to the matter ... or if vacuous fawning is all you are about, then by all means, use the rep system.

Why the incipient rage about this? The rep system does you no harm if you don't use it yourself; a more balanced outlook might be simply to say "I see no need for the rep system and don't use it myself, but don't care if others do, since it has no affect on what appears in the threads."

The mod team here put the rep system in place because it is clear that a majority of people like having it. For those who don't, paying no attention to it is a readily available option with no negative consequences for anyone's posting experience.

I really don't care what system you use but have to ask. What's the big deal with using the current system? One person doesn't like it and everyone gets all on edge to change or not. If it is changed to something that shows likes or I agee snippets on a post, it should have the handle of who is liking or agreeing. Make it all transparent.

Is everyone "on edge" about changing it? I don't think there are any plans to do so; El_G asked about a "like" button because we're trying to stay on top of what members want to see in the forum, and - when it's realistic - to oblige.

The people in this thread seem to be. Everyone else probably really don't care. The thing is, if you want to change it to appease a couple people, go for it. Most don't care. If not, go for that too.

I am reading this thread as more of a discussion of the mechanics and practical value, such as it is, of being able to rep people. I'm not seeing any movement afoot to change it, or any expressions of anxiety about that (currently non-existent) possibility. I could be missing something, though. I'm only halfway through my first coffee of the morning.

I am a vote for the way it is. I am old and don't like change. It works. I also hate Facebook. If I wanted like buttons, I would sign up. (No I wouldn't. I am paranoid too.)

I don't think we should remove or replace the rep system.

We've had to put limits on it though because it's been abused in the past. We could always lose those limits a bit but be careful, what the mod giveth, the mod taketh!

I was just thinking that maybe, possibly, hypothetically, if the stars align, we may add a thanks/like system on top of the rep system. It's very common on other boards and it's transparent too, everyone can see who liked and thanked what.

Even if our fellow mods were all in agreement, there are financial and technical hurdles to go through first. The thanks/like system would come in the form of a plug-in for the forum, with the best ones being behind a pay wall. The free ones may have some bugs that could affect other aspects of the forum. Just yesterday, I installed a free version of a thanks plug-in to toy around with on our test subforum but it turned out it is activated through out the whole forum (a limitation of the free version). It was activated for less than a minute but I had to turn it off because of that limitation.

So it's not trivial and all hypothetical at this stage. Don't hold your breath for it

We don't all, always have time to sit & write replies. & There is middle ground between your two extreme examples.
& FTR I am not all about vacuous fawning...far from it.

Nope it hasn't - not if this is a shiny bright new forum unless there are rep system abuses that we haven't been made aware of.

Not yet on this forum, indeed. However, based on my experience moderating forums (wink, wink), there is potential for it to happen.

But if we are not carrying any baggage form the old place, especially in regards to rep, maybe we should reset the rep points to 0? A clean slate?

Such a non-issue. Perhaps abandon it all together? I'm on a car forum where certain guys have four ID's. So they get +3 all the time immediately after posting. Sad.

I guess I have two speeds gushing and incipient rage, although I prefer to call them thoughtful, expansive expressions of agreement and colorful descent.

"I see no need for the rep system and don't use it myself, but don't care if others do, since it has no affect on what appears in the threads." might be just fine for some, especially if you wish your comments to quickly pass from the reader's memory.

I agree....I'm probably the oldest codger on this forum and I gladly accept change...especially if what is new is for the better. Age does mean it takes extra effort and time to measure that change is for the better, but age also brings experience and wisdom.......and extra caution.

Now I'll just go take a nap and contemplate my attitude....so don't make me change my mind...
