So here the Indonesian Statistics agency (BPS) might be right when reporting improving economic indicators such as falling poverty, lower unemployment, and easing inflation, so this brilliant proposal to raise parking fees up to Rp 60,000 for cars and Rp 15,000 for motorcycles per hour might be justifiable.

Unlike developed nations, In Indonesia and in Southeast Asia in general, motorcycles are an essential necessity for everyday transportation and activities. Penalising them with excessive parking charge without adequate public transit alternatives acts more like a regressive tax on ordinary people rather than an effective traffic management tool.

The proposed caps represent an extraordinary price jump (up to a 400% increase for cars and 150% for motorcycles relative to baseline rates). I believe even if this parking fees increase was included in the calculation for inflation figure, I believe the sycophant in BPS could still find a way to report the inflation is 2.88% or even lower. Not to worry as the people in remote village, do not need car, motorbike, do not need to park their vehicles.

I wonder if any country in this world could beat Indonesian officials, civil servants creativity in finding revenue for the region (or for themselves ?), state, creativity in reporting the national statistics.

It is set up by the local government after consultation with the local parliament. In Indonesia, Parking is classified directly as local revenue (Pendapatan Asli Daerah or PAD).

Pff, in cities as Amsterdam and NYC it’s 10x more expensive to park.

And sorry, but I’m not against upping parking rates at all. That might finally halt the ‘californian dream’ a bit over here that everybody should have their own car(s), as well as stimulate public transportation. Getting sick and tired of the everlasting macet expanding like a virus, see Bali for instance. Also good for employment in the sector of online taxi’s.

So if you own a commercial building, and construct and manage a car park in the basement you have to give all the revenue from the car park to the government?

Nope.
In this case, the parking revenue goes directly to the building and parking space owner (Landlord), or it is shared with a third-party parking operator if the owner chooses not to manage it independently. However, the local government also takes the cut of this income through a regional tax based on the parking turnover reported by management.
