A passenger flying on a Lion Air flight from Supadio airport in Pontianak told a flight attendant there was a bomb on board. Passengers broke the emergency exit window to get onto the wing and scramble over an engine to escape the plane that was preparing for take-off.

Apparently, he told the flight attendant to be careful he had a laptop & was misheard because of strong Papuan accent.

A couple of days ago this VH.

having seen how Indonesians react in a group in a tense situation I am not surprise they all panicked and bolted out of the emergency exit. Remember being in an office building (22nd floor) during an earthquake back in the mid 90s. The ensuing panic and hysteria caused more injuries that the quake did. Men were acting like pussies shoving screaming women out of the way in a bid to get down the stairs fastest, people being trampled and pushed down the stairs, I was shocked.

The irony was that once they got out of the building they all congregated under the footprint of the curtain wall.

Yes, this story evolved way past that incident in the video.

Big difference between "Hati[sup]2[/sup] Bom" and "Hati[sup]2[/sup] Bu". But there are witnesses for both scenarios. What also will be important, is that the stewardess (flight attendant) panicked herself and seems to have given incomplete or even wrong instructions.

The thing is also that 'hot' information in RI is not properly checked by news channels since everyone wants to be first. Happening more and more in the West too of course. See for instance the killings in The Hague and Liège. And people are just focused on the videos. Modern version of calamity tourism.

Plus the murdered journalist in Ukraine oops he's alive again, magic

That story is almost (not entirely) completely unlike what I experienced when I was on the 32nd floor of a Jakarta office building and we had a big quake.

The whole building emptied out, and everyone docilely walked down the stairs in the stairwell. I was pretty scared and would have preferred it if everyone had marched along at a pretty good clip.

But no. This being Indonesia, all the females were wobbling along in delicate high heels, and so they had to mince at a s-l-o-w pace down all the steps. (The option of taking off the damn shoes and walking barefoot seems not to have occurred to anyone.) I of course was in flats, and ready to hot-foot it out of the building. Everyone was being quite polite, however, and walking in single file, no pushing, shoving, or telling anyone to hurry up. I think it must have taken a full half hour to GTF outside.

I WANTED to rush by everyone, since my natural speed was two or three times as fast as we were going. But I didn't want to be rude, especially as a bule surrounded by Indonesians. I thought to myself at the time, "Great, I'm gonna die because I'm too polite."

The part about congregating right next to the building, though? Yeah, that's EXACTLY how it was in my experience too.

I’m going out on a limb here and say the difference between the two groups was that yours have participated in an earthquake or evacuation drill once or twice before and the other lot never have...

That's quite possible. It was the Mulia Building, if I recall the name correctly (green building next to the two BRI buildings near Semanggi). The building management was pretty good about fire drills and such.

This was Menara Batavia on Jl Mas Mansur 1996. It was a newly commissioned building hence the reason we were still fitting out the offices on the 20th and 21st and 22nd floors. So I think your comment regarding the lack of SOP for fire/quake evacuation maybe very well founded.

I remember a BataviAir 737 had a wet start, they can be quite impressive flames shooting out the back of the engine, a passenger shouted, We are on fire, and quite a few passengers jumped out, broken legs etc, just wild panic, so nothing new really
