OUCH! OUCH! ETC.

Some say that. Some say Disneyland with the death penalty.
Interestingly though it has very low crime along with harsh punishments. People there believe there's a link.
Another key to that is also education and money aka. low poverty, compared to some other states with the death sentence. If you have good education and something to lose then hard punishments might scare you.

Yes if one's wealthy there should be little motivation to rob a petrol kiosk or sell drugs on a small scale. But I'm not sure how education would figure into deterrence.
Singapore's had both low crime and harsh penalties since well before they became so very rich.

A fine city.

A fine city, well organized, much too well

A bit like a soft version of USSR.
It is sur not a democracy, and freedom in all domain is very limited.

But it works ! With Chinese.....

Oh I meant it in a way that when it all comes together it might work. Everyone goes to good schools and gets a good education (probably almost too good in the case of Singapore), there is low poverty and hard rules.
I mean crime rates are surely connected to poorer and undeducated "areas", since there is a connection between the two in my opinion. Not always a perfect connection, that's for sure. An educated person can still be poor. But overall an educated person is able to make better decisions for themselves and has more choices.
Then I remember reading that the crime rates in Asia in general, there are always exceptions of course, are lower than in western countries. Sure in some cases it might have something to do with hard rules but maybe also with culture, mindset and maybe also religion in some cases.
From my feeling, I don't say that's representative, even a developing country Indonesia feels safer and has less violent crime in the general public than Europe for example. Again, i didn't check the numbers, it's just a feeling.

I don't know. There seems to always be exceptions. In the US some areas, like the southern Appalachians, for many years were relatively poor and uneducated yet had low crime rates (that changed a lot with Oxy and meth and free everything from the government). It seems we need to factor in culture too.

Yes I agee. Culture and family structures for example are also a major point and also in some cases religion. I would say that religion opens up other problems(especially too much Religjon) but can, in the best case, at least ensure some rules and ethics

50 years ago in Belgium or France, bleu collar workers were much poorer than now. Still there was much less petty criminality.
What happened ?
Drugs
Uncontrolled immigration
Loss of ethic rules
Loss of religion
Education went downhill, culture and history are now inexistant.
Lack of law enforcement, loss of respect for the law and the justice system
And probably a few other reasons like more selfishness, greed, need to show off.
And the final nail.in the coffin : social media.....

By 30 our parents already owned a house (ok paying mortgage) and had real jobs

Now? Everyone works on Tiktok and either lives with parents or somehow makes $5m a year reviewing noodles

Another factor in the low crime rate is that as a nanny state Singapore does not have the desperate poverty as was once the case.

Yes, and no. Singapore has desperate poverty in the same way that Dubai has…

There are always construction people eager to exploit illegal immigrants and, as you say, I am sure this is the case in Singapore but in Dubai the exploitation of immigrant workers seems to have been at a governmental level.\

Then there is white collar crime, often well hidden and probably costing communities a lot more than that caused by the petty criminals who get seriously done over for their crimes.
