I still believe that nobody should lay a finger on Anning, he should be trolled, mocked, and jeered relentlessly instead. Seeing his face egged gives me schadenfreude, but still, he shouldn't be physically assaulted. It's just an egg, but how would you feel if the politician is a woman and somebody 'just' touches her breast to demean her?

I know it sounds weird coming from a guy who carries a gun on a daily basis, but I really believe that violence should be a last resort. If that guy comes after me and my family with a rifle, he will receive a warm greeting in the form of lead going 1000 fps. But, if all he does is say stupid hateful things, at most I'll stare at him to make sure he doesn't go beyond words.

Agreed. Thrown like a baseball at his face, yes that would be assault and crossing the line of proper response. But smashed gently on the back of his head, maybe by some technical definition "assault", but considering the target, I wholly approve.

I don't know what the killer though(t?) but I guess the boy with the egg or guys with the pies, had similar opinions about these politicians.

The murderer stated at his trial that he murdered Fortuyn to stop him from exploiting Muslims as "scapegoats" and targeting "the vulnerable sections of society" in seeking political power.

The thing is you can never know how the nutcases react and what they see fit as carte blanche, if someone they target is very controversial in society.

Makes sense to me, pie in the face, egg in the head, light spank on the bottom, etc. Eventually it is a small step to the next escalation stage .I don't subscribe to this as I would like to think that I am a critical thinker and evaluate most of my next steps . However others may not be as critical. And I can't discount that it has happened before . The frog in warm water allegory have been brought up in many psychology experiments before.

It is very disturbing for me to know that the terrorist got inspired in conducting his attack after witnessing France immigration situation during a trip to Europe a couple of years ago.
It is equally very disturbing for me to find out in french reader's comments of news or sosmed that quite a few openly support or mildly condemn his act, often using aliases to post, but not always. The lessons learnt through the 20th century seems to have been forgotten by many.

One thing that puzzled me was he claimed Candice Owens as an influence. She is a Trump supporter, but the videos I have seen are her talking about Blexit, to encourage African Americans to abandon the Democratic Party and switch to the Republican side.

Such a horrible attack. My condolences to all the victims. Several Indonesians were among the injured.

It is shocking such a thing occurred in New Zealand, not typically known for gross violence and hatred.

However, it's not surprising. With the toxic rhetoric coming from politicians who whip up their racist followers into a hate frenzy, this will continue to occur. When the current racist in chief in Washington equates refugees and asylum seekers to invaders, or says they are good people on both sides when one side is actually a Nazi rally, then this is what it leads to. Australian politicians (shooter was Aussie) such as Fraser Anning went as far as blaming the victims for migrating to NZ.

If you support such leaders, YOU. ARE. COMPLICIT.

But then again, maybe a murderous rampage like this is what you really wanted in the first place.

Those are important issues that all have technology, regulations, and law enforcement actively trying to reduce. But the death toll from terrorist attacks differs in importance because the goal isn't just murder, but to create millions of victims in the form of terror. Every time we take off our shoes at airport security, the terrorists win a small battle.

Are you sure about that? I remember a few trucks of peace plowing through the crowd in Western countries recently. Pulse nightclub shooting? Boston marathon bombing? Ariana Grande's concert? Are you saying that those aren't growing trends and we should just be content with this baseline number? I don't have the greatest memory, but I don't recall any wayward trucks running into crowd of people in Germany or France in the past.

To be honest, the white nationalists' response is rather tepid. Even the Buddhists can muster harsher reaction as we witness in Myanmar. Can you imagine what you have to do to piss off Buddhists? This does not bode well for the situation in Sri Lanka.

@Asun I think it is plainly obvious that since 9/11 violent islamic extremism is an established threat. Acknowledging new trends and threats doesn't diminish that.

It is a very sad situation for the Muslim minority in Sri Lanka who will probably suffer serious reprisal attacks (which is why the government has shut down social media and not releasing names of the terrorists). It seems that some IS suicide bombers flew in specially for the attack as part of a strategy to foment conflict in places which have so far not been touched by this particular type of religious conflict. It's not that the local muslims started blowing up churches.

Anyway it encourages me to continue my policy of avoiding churches here at festival time. And of course ramadhan is coming up, which is the peak time for atrocities. Buckle up!
